There hasn’t been much to celebrate during this Chargers season, but punt returner Micheal Spurlock provided them with a highlight last Sunday.
Spurlock took a punt back 63 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter, giving them their first punt return for a score since 2009 and sending them on their way to a 27-17 victory over the Jets. Spurlock has been named the AFC special teams player of the week as a result of his score, joining linebacker Donald Butler as the only weekly individual award winners for San Diego this year.
It’s the third time Spurlock has won special teams player of the week. Each of his previous honors came as a member of the Buccaneers with the last one coming after Week 16 of the 2009 season. It’s Spurlock’s second career punt return and he has also taken two kickoffs back the distance over the course of his career.
The league also singled out Bengals punter Kevin Huber and Ravens kicker Justin Tucker as other nominees for this week’s award.
