The Bengals have placed wide receiver Andrew Hawkins on short-term injured reserve and re-signed offensive tackle Dennis Roland, the club said Wednesday.

PFT reported the return of Roland to Cincinnati on Tuesday. He’s made 30 starts in the last five seasons with Cincinnati.

The Bengals also announced they had signed ex-Jets quarterback Greg McElroy to their practice squad. The Bengals have just two quarterbacks (Andy Dalton, Josh Johnson) on their roster, but they now have an experienced third option ready to promote if needed.

Hawkins has an ankle injury that kept him out of the preseason. He must miss at least the Bengals’ first eight games, but he can return to game action in the second half of 2013 should the club chose to re-add him to the roster. The 27-year-old receiver caught 51 passes for 533 yards and four touchdowns in 2012.
