Ben Johnson: Tyson Bagent could never get in a rhythm today

Bears head coach Ben Johnson benched quarterback Tyson Bagent during today’s loss to the Packers, and he said afterward that Bagent was off throughout the game.

Bagent was struggling throughout the game, but Johnson said he wasn’t thinking of benching Bagent until the Bears’ last offensive play of the third quarter, when Bagent threw his second interception of the game. After that, Johnson put Case Keenum in for the fourth quarter.

“We just wanted a little spark there,” Johnson said. “Tyson, just could never feel like he got in a rhythm here today. We’ll look at why that was the case. The second interception happened and we just felt like, let’s give Case a chance out there and see if we get different results.”

Johnson said starting quarterback Caleb Williams might be cleared from his hamstring injury to play next week against the Falcons. If Williams isn’t cleared, there’s no word yet on whether Bagent or Keenum will get the call. Johnson said the coaching staff will assess that question this week.
