The Bears have brought in Ernie Accorsi to consult on their searches for a new coach and general manager and it looks like he’s held onto to a couple of names from his consulting gig with the Panthers a couple of years ago.
Giants vice president of player evaluation Marc Ross and Titans vice president of player personnel Lake Dawson were both in the mix for the opening at general manager that eventually went to Dave Gettleman and it looks like they’ll be on the list of candidates in Chicago as well. John Wooten of the Fritz Pollard Alliance said that he spoke to Accorsi this week and that Accorsi indicated Ross, Dawson and Ravens pro personnel director Vince Newsome were on the list in Chicago. Chiefs player personnel director Chris Ballard is also expected to be a candidate.
Whoever winds up moving to the front of the G.M. pack, Wooten said that Accorsi said that the plan is to hire a general manager before hiring a coach.
“You know and I know that they have to be a husband-wife, father-mother, brother-sister type of relationship between the coach and the general manager to even have a chance,” Wooten said, via the Chicago Sun-Times. “If you don’t have that, you only have to look at the 49ers.”
There’s no word on an interview schedule at this point, but you’d imagine the Bears will work quickly if they want to have a G.M. in place before locking down their coach.
