The Bears made a couple of big additions on Monday with the signings of tight end Martellus Bennett and tackle Jermon Bushrod, which means they need to make some cuts elsewhere to keep themselves in a position to bid on players they might like to add to their team.
Defensive tackle Matt Toeaina is expected to become a victim of that desire. Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that Toeaina is on his way out of a job after refusing to take a pay cut.
Toeaina is set to make a $760,000 base salary, with a $290,000 roster bonus and $75,000 workout bonus. That’s hardly a gold-plated contract, but Toeaina is coming off a year when he played just three games last year after losing his starting job and injured his knee. The Bears can get something similar for less money and, for now, they gain $1.125 million in salary cap space.
Toeaina is currently in Rome, per Jensen, and will have to start hunting for a job when he’s back in the states unless he winds up landing that opening in the Vatican everyone’s been talking about.
