While there’s still only one man who currently could spark a serious debate regarding the question of whether the Redskins should do something their owner says will NEVER happen, a couple of Hall of Famers who played for the team have become the first key figures tied to the franchise to say that it’s time to consider a name change.
Both Ark Monk and Darrell Green have told WTOP radio that they think consideration of a new name is appropriate.
Monk said the issue should be “seriously considered.”
“It deserves and warrants conversation because somebody is saying, ‘Hey, this offends me,’” said Green, who was named last month by Pro Football Talk on NBCSN and PFT Planet to team’s all-time Mt. Rushmore.
No current players or employees of the franchise publicly have said the name should be changed. Former quarterback Joe Theismann recently said the name should remain -- not long before he said he’d like to become an employee of the team again.
While the opinions of Monk and Green likely won’t push the situation to critical mass, it’s more evidence of the slow but steady momentum that will continue to build until the name is changed, whether it happens in five years, 50 years, or somewhere in between.
