Archie Manning tries to steer clear of Peyton-related controversy

Manning

Our favorite Manning has always been Archie. Apart from giving us (with a mild assist from Olivia) two of the best quarterbacks of the current NFL era, Archie provided the lone bright spot on an awful Saints team in the 1970s.

And while I personally was hopeful that Archie would have something to say in response to the ill-timed and poorly chosen remarks of Colts owner Jim Irsay about the reasons for moving on from Peyton, Archie has decided to stay away from the minefield that Irsay created.

“Oh, I don’t know,” Archie Manning tells Jarrett Bell of USA Today regarding the “championships over stats” comments from Irsay. “I’m just trying to stay out of this mess.”

The response implies that a mess exists, and that would be because it definitely does. Peyton will get a chance tonight to try to clean it up by mopping up Lucas Oil Stadium with Irsay’s current team, which supposedly has been built to one-up Peyton’s 11 playoff appearances, two Super Bowl appearances, and one Super Bowl win.

After the game, we’ll see whether Peyton or Archie will be able to refrain from comment. In the heat of the moment, it could be hard for them to keep biting their tongues.
