Anthony Richardson was named the Colts’ No. 2 quarterback today, and while that’s a far cry from what he was expected to be when the Colts made him the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, it’s a role Richardson said he’s happy to have.
Richardson, who beat out Riley Leonard in the competition to back up Daniel Jones, told reporters that he considers it an honor that coach Shane Steichen thinks he’s the right man for the No. 2 job.
“I was honored,” Richardson said. “I’m just blessed to continue to find a way to lead, continue to find my way on the roster. I’m just thankful they believe in me enough to promote me to QB2. I’m just ready to work and I’m willing to work with the team and provide my best self for this squad and help us win.”
As he heads into the fourth and final season of his rookie contract, Richardson has started just 15 games, completed 50.6 percent of his passes, and thrown 11 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions. He’s nowhere near the player the Colts hoped he would be when they drafted him, but he’s trying to see the positive in being second string instead of third string.
