Andy Reid: If Patrick Mahomes can go, he’ll go

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is dealing with a high-ankle sprain, but it’s unclear if that means he is going to miss Saturday’s game against the Texans.

Mahomes injured his ankle in the team’s Week 15 win over the Browns and Carson Wentz closed out the game at quarterback. On Tuesday, head coach Andy Reid said the plan is for Mahomes to try to practice on what he called a “lighter day” of on-field work.

“Let’s just see what he does, how he does, feels. He’s always honest with me, he’s gonna shoot me straight on it.” Reid said at his press conference.

Reid also said that the team is not factoring the short turnaround from Saturday to their Christmas game against the Steelers into their plans for Mahomes.

“If he can go, he’ll go,” Reid said. “If he can’t, then he can’t. It’s that simple. That’s how we’ll roll. I’ll just take it day by day and see how he does.”

Practice reports over the next few days will bring word about how much work Mahomes is able to do, but a decision on his status for the game seems likely stretch into the weekend.
