49ers safety Dashon Goldson didn’t get the long-term contract he wanted last offseason, so he returned to the 49ers on an inexpensive one-year deal.
He’s headed back to the 49ers on a one-year deal, but he’s getting a nice raise this time. The 49ers officially announced that they placed the franchise tag on Goldson Friday.
“Dashon has been a 49er since we selected him in the fourth round of the 2007 draft,” said 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke. “By using the franchise tag on Dashon, it affords us the opportunity to continue to work on a long-term contract with him, while also ensuring he will be a 49er for a sixth season, in 2012.”
Goldson, who has been up and down throughout his career, played his best under Jim Harbaugh and Vic Fangio in 2011. He will cost roughly $6.2 million unless the two sides hammer out a long-term deal. San Francisco has already re-signed Ahmad Brooks, so they are doing a nice job keeping the core of their talented defense together.
Cornerback Carlos Rogers looks likely to hit free agency at this point and could be tough to retain. San Francisco has a great replacement on the roster in Chris Culliver.
