Denver Broncos
Included last week in a purge of veterans from the Jacksonville roster, veteran tight end Evan Engram is looking for a new team.
His search continued on Tuesday, with (per NFL Media) a visit to the Chargers.
Engram visited the Broncos on Monday.
A first-round pick in 2017 from Mississippi, Engram has spent five years with the Giants and three with the Jaguars. He made the Pro Bowl in 2020 and 2023.
His best season came in 2023, with 114 catches for 963 yards. Injuries limited him to nine games in 2024. He caught 47 passes for 365 yards in his final season in Jacksonville.
Will Dissly is the top tight end on the L.A. roster. He caught 50 passes for 481 yards and two touchdowns in 2024, his first year with the Chargers.
Veteran punter Riley Dixon is on the move in free agency.
Dixon has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the Buccaneers, according to multiple reports.
The 31-year-old Dixon originally entered the NFL as a 2016 seventh-round draft pick of the Broncos. He played two years in Denver, then four with the Giants and three with the Rams, before returning to Denver in 2023 and playing the last two seasons with the Broncos.
The Broncos will now look for a new punter, while the Bucs have their own new punter in the fold.
The Broncos have agreed to terms on a three-year deal worth $35 million, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports.
Greenlaw joins former 49ers teammate Talanoa Hufanga in Denver. Greenlaw is 15th on PFT’s top-100 free agents list and Hufanga 14th.
Greenlaw tore his Achilles tendon in Super Bowl LVIII and didn’t play in 2024 until Week 15. He ended up playing only 34 snaps in two games.
Still, Greenlaw had a healthy free agent market.
The 49ers made Greenlaw a fifth-round pick in 2019, and he spent his first six seasons with the team. He has totaled 455 tackles, 3.5 sacks, three interceptions, 14 pass breakups and two forced fumbles in his career.
For the first time, quarterback Zach Wilson is a free agent. And he’ll be returning to the AFC East as he continues his effort to turn his career around.
Wilson, per multiple reports, has agreed to terms on a one-year, $6 million deal with the Dolphins. The base contract is fully guaranteed. He can earn up to $4 million in incentives.
The Dolphins have been criticized, justifiably, for failing to have sufficiently competent understudies to starter Tua Tagovailoa.
Wilson was the second overall pick in the 2021 draft. The Jets traded him to the Broncos last year. He was the consensus No. 2 prospect that year, after Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Of five first-round quarterbacks that year, four became free agents today. Justin Fields has agreed to terms with the Jets. Trey Lance and Mac Jones remain available.
Wilson has appeared in 34 regular-season games, with 33 starts. He has a record of 12-21.
The Titans have agreed to terms on a three-year, $21 million deal with inside linebacker Cody Barton, NFL Media reports.
Barton is 96th on PFT’s top-100 free agents list.
He started 14 of the 17 games he played for the Broncos in 2024, totaling 106 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two interceptions, five passes defensed, a forced fumble and a recovered fumble.
The Seahawks drafted Barton in the third round in 2019, and he played his first four seasons in Seattle before going to Washington in 2023. He signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Broncos a year ago.
He has appeared in 95 games with 43 starts in his career, recording 458 tackles, 3.5 sacks, five interceptions, 14 passes defensed and three forced fumbles.
The Broncos have finalized a three-year agreement with safety Talanoa Hufanga that will pay him a max of $45 million with $20 guaranteed at signing, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Hufanga will start opposite Brandon Jones in the Broncos’ secondary.
Hufanga made All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in 2022, but he has played only 17 the past two seasons combined. He tore an ACL two years ago and had a wrist injury that hampered him in 2024.
In seven games last season, he totaled 38 tackles.
The 49ers made Hufanga a fifth-round pick in 2021, and he spent his first four seasons with the team.
He leaves with seven interceptions and 14 pass breakups.
No, the Buccaneers didn’t agree to terms with running back Samaje Perine on a three-year $22 million deal. Or on any deal.
Instead, Perine will be returning to the Bengals after a two-year break.
It’s a two-year deal, worth up to $3.8 million. Which is quite the difference from three years and $22 million.
Perine spent three full seasons with the Bengals before playing for the Broncos in 2023 and the Chiefs in 2024. His best year came as a rookie with Washington in 2017, when he rushed for 603 yards. Last year, he had 92 yards in 16 regular-season games with the Chiefs.
The Texans have reached agreement with another free agent.
According to multiple reports, they have agreed to terms with defensive back Tremon Smith. The news comes shortly after word that they have struck a deal with wide receiver Braxton Berrios.
Smith’s deal is for two years with a value of $7.5 million. It includes $4.5 million in guaranteed money.
Smith spent the last two seasons as a core special teams player with the Broncos, but also spent two years with Houston earlier in his career. He had nine tackles and a fumble recovery last season and he has 62 tackles, two interceptions, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries over his entire career.
The Broncos are keeping some offensive line depth.
Per Peter Schrager of NFL Media, Matt Peart has agreed to re-sign with the Broncos on a two-year deal.
Schrager notes the contract is worth $7 million with incentives potentially driving it up to $10 million total.
Peart signed a one-year contract with the Broncos last offseason and ended up appearing in all 17 games with two starts. He was on the field for 17 percent of offensive snaps and 18 percent of special teams snaps.
A third-round pick in 2020, Peart spent his first four seasons with the Giants. He’s played 60 career games with nine starts.
Most of the news since noon has focused on players reaching new deals, with their current teams or new ones. Here’s one about a deal that is being negotiated.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports that the Broncos are trying to close a deal with 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga.
A fifth-round pick in 2021 and a Pro Bowler in 2022, Hufanga suffered a torn ACL during the 2023 season. He returned to play in seven games last season.
The deal isn’t done yet. Then again, none of the deals between free agents and new teams are officially done until Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. ET. In theory, either side can change their minds — and it’s happened before. (Examples, Anthony Barr and Frank Gore.)
Stay tuned, on this one and all others.
