NFC North rivals Green Bay and Minnesota meet Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis to kickoff the 2026 season. Expectations are high for both teams but each takes the field with new faces and injury concerns.
Green Bay finished last season 9-7-1 and earned the NFC’s No. 7 seed, reaching the playoffs for a third consecutive season. That said, the Packers were 9-3-1 and in first place in the NFC North entering Week 15 before losing their final four regular-season games after star pass rusher Micah Parsons suffered a torn ACL. The slide continued in the postseason when Green Bay squandered a 21-3 halftime lead and lost 31-27 to Chicago in the Wild Card round.
Minnesota finished 9-8 but missed the playoffs. The Vikings were 3-2 early, then dropped six of seven games to fall to 4-8 before rallying with a five-game winning streak to close the season. They ultimately finished just a half-game behind Green Bay for the final NFC playoff spot. While former Viking Sam Darnold was off in Seattle winning the Super Bowl, Minnesota on a good Sunday was treading water with JJ McCarthy, Carson Wentz, and Max Brosmer.
This is Jordan Love’s fourth season as Green Bay’s starting signal-caller. He is the franchise centerpiece. Last season he averaged 225.4 passing yards per game, threw 23 touchdown passes and only six interceptions. The Vikings signed Kyler Murray in the offseason to be their QB1. Murray’s dual-threat skill set gives head coach Kevin O’Connell an entirely different offensive dimension. During seven seasons in Arizona, Murray surpassed 3,700 passing yards four times and topped 500 rushing yards in three seasons.
The major storyline is how effective Murray can be for the Vikings against a banged up Green Bay defense that will be without Micah Parsons (knee). As noted previously, the Packers labored without Parsons last season. Additionally, Green Bay is already banged up across the offensive line and without running back Josh Jacobs (susp). Can they generate anything on the ground and keep their defense off the field in the process? They’ll have their hands full as Brian Flores’ defense ranked third in total defense and tied for fourth in sacks with 49.
