Bills GM Brandon Beane told reporters Wednesday that the team is “cautiously optimistic” that Mitchell Trubisky won’t need to be placed on injured reserve.
Beane did also caution that they won’t know for sure until they see Trubisky practice, so it can’t be ruled out. The 30-year-old backup injured his knee during the early portion of camp. If he’s unable to go, the Bills will likely go with Mike White as the backup to Josh Allen after White was signed to the practice squad by Buffalo on Tuesday.
  • BUF Quarterback #14
Bills signed QB Mike White, formerly of the Dolphins, to their practice squad.
White was one of the Dolphins’ first roster cuts of cutdown season, and now he lands with his third AFC East team over the last three seasons. He started seven games over two seasons with the Jets, passing for 2,145 yards and eight touchdowns. Only attempting six passes all of last season, White was backed into third-string duties with the Dolphins and cut. The AFC East rival Bills scoop White up to add him to their practice squad while Josh Allen and Mitchell Trubisky are the quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.
  • FA Quarterback #14
    Dolphins released QB Mike White.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first with the report. The release of White means 2022 seventh-rounder Skylar Thompson has won the job as Tua Tagovailoa’s backup to start the season. White threw for 179 scoreless yards this preseason while completing a dismal 46.5 percent of his passes. A seven-year veteran of the league, White has thrown for 2,219 yards, nine touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 14 career games. He’s a serviceable backup who will likely get a shot elsewhere before the start of next season and could still be brought back as Miami’s emergency quarterback given his familiarity with the system.
  • MIA Quarterback #14
Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel said QB Mike White is in concussion protocol.
According to McDaniel, members of the Dolphins’ staff noticed irregularities in White during last week’s preseason game against the Texans, prompting them to look further into his situation. White will now have to clear concussion protocol in time for the Dolphins’ Week 1 matchup against the Chargers if he hopes to suit up and has plenty of time to do so. White was brought in to serve as a backup quarterback upgrade after Tua Tagovailoa suffered multiple concussions last season.
  • BUF Quarterback #14
Dolphins signed QB Mike White, formerly of the Jets, to a two-year contract.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal is worth “up to” $16 million. That means the actual cap figure will come in at far less than $16 million, though White can reach the larger number through incentives. The Dolphins were forced to turn to Teddy Bridgewater and eventually Skylar Thompson after Tua Tagovailoa went down last year. Neither player came close to replacing the production of Miami’s starter. Dolphins GM Chris Grier mentioned some concerns around Tua’s health at the combine, making an upgrade at backup quarterback inevitable. White showed a strong ability to execute a quick passing game and hit short to intermediate throws while in New York. He joins the Dolphins as a far safer insurance policy on their starter than they had in 2022.

  • BUF Quarterback #14
Jets coach Robert Saleh said free agent QB Mike White “should be on the roster” in 2023.
White will become a free agent for the first time later this month. With Zach Wilson signed through 2024 and the Jets expected to add a veteran quarterback, White is more likely to sign elsewhere than be back with the Jets. The Rams and ex-Jets OC Mike LaFleur have been rumored as a landing spot for White.

  • NO Quarterback #4
ESPN’s Dianna Russini reports the Jets believe they would be a Super Bowl contender with Derek Carr at quarterback.
“They went through top to bottom of why Derek Carr can step in here and take this team not just to the playoffs but to the Super Bowl,” Russini said Tuesday. “And they made it really personal, too. They said, ‘We believe if you come to New York and win, you could be a first ballot Hall of Famer.’” It’s quite the projection for a quarterback who in 2022 threw a career high 14 interceptions and ranked 29th in completion rate over expected. Carr, 31, was released by the Raiders and will reportedly do his “due diligence” in evaluating potential landing spots for 2023. With a viable signal caller -- something they lacked last season -- the Jets could easily be a playoff team with Carr under center. If he signs in New York, Carr would be the runaway favorite to start over Zach Wilson.

  • BUF Quarterback #14
The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt writes to “keep an eye on the Rams” for Jets quarterback Mike White.
White will hit free agency for the first time in 2023. Rosenblatt notes that it is “no secret” that new Rams OC Mike LaFleur preferred White as the starter over Zach Wilson last season in New York. White is expected to draw interest as a “high-end backup” per Rosenblatt, with the Jets likely looking elsewhere for a starting quarterback. It’s possible that White could be a bridge starter elsewhere and get more playing time, but players do often follow the coaches that give them chances and Matthew Stafford is coming off a scary spinal contusion in a lost season.

  • NYJ Quarterback #8
NBC Sports’ Peter King reports Jets owner Woody Johnson would “happily” acquire Aaron Rodgers in a trade.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently reported that a Rodgers trade is a “very real possibility” this offseason after the Packers failed to make the postseason. King said moving Rodgers would hardly be a heavy lift for a team like the Jets since Rodgers’ “cap numbers in the next two seasons would be $48.3 million, combined. That’s certainly manageable. As for the compensation due Green Bay, my guess is the Pack would want at least two first-round picks.” The Jets last week interviewed former Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett for the team’s offensive coordinator job, perhaps to attract Rodgers’ interest. Rodgers worked with Hackett in Green Bay before Hackett landed the Denver job. With a talent-packed roster and no viable starting quarterback options on the roster, the Jets would seem to be a solid fit for Rodgers. Jordan Love would presumably take over for the Packers if Rodgers is dealt this offseason.

  • BUF Quarterback #14
The Jets declared QB Mike White, RB James Robinson, WR Irvin Charles, TE C.J. Uzomah and DL Bradlee Anae inactive for Week 18 against the Dolphins.
With the Jets getting knocked out of the playoffs in Week 17, they’re playing for pride in hopes of ruining the Dolphins season. With Mike White out (ribs) Joe Flacco will get the start at quarterback and Zach Wilson will back him up.
