Left tackle Marvel Smith, who was hampered by a pinched nerve all last season, is one of four offensive line starters in Pittsburgh returning from injury last season.
Serious injuries to Smith, Alan Faneca, Kendall Simmons, and Jeff Hartings undermined the Steelers’ chances last year. A healthy line this season could mean solid numbers for Tommy Maddox, Hines Ward, Plaxico Burress, Duce Staley, and Jerome Bettis.
  • The Raiders are reportedly interested in free agent OTs Marvel Smith and Khalif Barnes.
Mario Henderson is still raw at left tackle and incumbent RT Cornell Green is no great shakes on the strong side. The Raiders want to sign one veteran free agent tackle and possibly add another in the draft.
  • Steelers T Marvel Smith will miss Week 17 with a bad back and is in jeopardy of missing the playoffs.
Pittsburgh’s line has been inconsistent all year, and could have a difficult first-round matchup against the Jaguars.
  • Steelers LT Marvel Smith (back surgery) is expected to be “fine” for the 2008 season.
Smith’s procedure to repair a disk in his back was considered “minor.” He’ll only be 30 next season while entering the final year of his contract.
  • FA Wide Receiver #14
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says WR Santonio Holmes (ankle), SS Troy Polamalu (knee), and LT Marvel Smith (back) could all start in Week 14.
Tomlin indicated the same at the start of last week. “It depends on how they perform in practice,” the coach reiterated Tuesday. Each has been out for the last three weeks. Holmes is trying to return from a high ankle sprain.
  • Steelers LT Marvel Smith (back) is not expected to play Thursday night.
Smith, who surrendered four of the Jaguars’ five sacks of Ben Roethlisberger Sunday, was replaced by Max Starks in the second half. The Steelers shouldn’t have as many problems containing St. Louis’ pass rush in Week 16.
  • Steelers LT Marvel Smith underwent back surgery Thursday and will be out indefinitely.
Smith will definitely miss Week 17 and the Steelers’ Wild Card game against a to-be-determined opponent. His replacement will be Max Starks. The team is “cautiously optimistic” that Smith could be available in three weeks.
