Penn State redshirt junior DB Jonathan Sutherland was arrested on one count of misdemeanor criminal mischief.
According to the complaint, Sutherland (5'11/202) had attended a party and was handed a gun from another person who told him that the firearm was unloaded. He subsequently pointed the gun at a line of trees and fired, causing the bullet to ricochet through a nearby condo complex’s walls and into a resident’s master bathroom where it finally stopped, allegedly causing $2,000 of damage to the property. The former four-star recruit has logged 523 defensive snaps over his four years on campus in a reserve role, recording 75 tackles, three PBU and two forced fumbles. There is no word on what action will be taken by HC James Franklin at this time.

  • Penn State received a verbal commitment from four-star 2017 S Jonathan Sutherland.
“Sitting down with [co-DC and safeties coach Tim Banks] and talking about where I would fit into their defense and being around the player and future teammates made me feel really comfortable,” Sutherland said. Rivals recruiting analyst Adam Friedman called the 6-foot, 196-pounder “a nice addition to the Penn State secondary” due to the fact that he “brings a physical attitude to the defense and has a good nose for the ball.” Sutherland hopes to compete for a starting job with the Nittany Lions right out of the gate.
  • Four-star 2017 S Jonathan Sutherland indicated that Boston College, Wisconsin, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Michigan and North Carolina were his top six teams.
In no particular order with that sextet. Sutherland recently visited Wisconsin and elaborated on that particular option, saying, “I saw the city of Madison, a lot of the facilities, and just everything they have to offer. I also took a full campus tour and was able to get a feel for the campus environment.” The 6-foot, 196-pounder called it a “really good trip” and said that it would be the last one he takes before summer. Sutherland ranks as Rivals’ No. 239 overall recruit for the 2017 cycle.
