Browns LG Joel Bitonio said he will take some time in the offseason to consider retirement.
When asked about the possibility of 2024 being his final season in the league, Bitonio said, “We’ll see how we’re doing in a couple of weeks after the season. It’s very hard to make a decision when you’re in the middle of [the season].” Bitonio, who has one year left on his contract, did say that he doesn’t envision himself joining another team — which would only happen via trade or his release, but it’s clear the direction of the franchise has taken its toll on a handful of the Browns’ top players as of late. Myles Garrett most notably voiced his displeasure with the franchise which has led some to speculate he could be a potential trade candidate this offseason. It’s shaping up to be another interesting offseason in Cleveland, but two of the team’s top players departing will only make the turnaround that much more difficult.

Browns LG Joel Bitonio (back) is questionable for Week 15 against the Chiefs.
Bitonio returned to practice on Friday after missing the first two practices of the week with the back issue. He should be able to suit up on Sunday. If he can’t, rookie guard Zak Zinter could take his place in the lineup.

Browns LG Joel Bitonio (back) did not practice Wednesday.
Bitonio has been one of the few Cleveland linemen to stay healthy this year, appearing in all 13 games so far. Rookie Zak Zinter has a few starts at right guard this year and could move to the left side if Bitonio can’t suit up.

Browns writer Nate Ulrich writes OG Joel Bitonio plans to play in 2024 “despite injuries snowballing.”
Bitonio dealt with a number of injuries throughout the regular season, and suffered a high right ankle sprain in Saturday’s playoff loss to the Texans. The six-time Pro Bowler said he believes he can still play “at a very elite level” and wants to continue to show that next season. Bitonio is under contract through 2025 and is fresh off his sixth-straight Pro Bowl nomination. This season marks the first time since 2017 that Bitonio wasn’t named a first or second-team All-Pro, but he still suited up for 15 of the Browns’ 17 regular season contests. His PFF blocking grades were among some of the lowest in his career, but we can probably chalk some of that up to injury. A full offseason of recovery may be all Bitonio needs to bounce back next year.
  • CLE Wide Receiver #2
Browns WR Amari Cooper (heel, rest) did not participate in Tuesday’s practice.
Cooper has missed Weeks 17 and 18 with a heel injury. He narrowly missed Week 17 after testing out his heel in warmups and did not play in Week 18 with the Browns essentially having nothing to play for. Cooper starts the week off with a DNP, with a “non-injury related - rest” label along with the heel. It seems the Browns are easing in key players with injuries this week, with Myles Garrett (shoulder, hamstring), Joel Bitonio (oblique, knee), and David Njoku (knee) all listed as out with rest in addition to their injuries. All are likely to give it a go for Wild Card Weekend.

Browns LG Joel Bitonio (back) is active for Week 16 against the Texans.
Bitonio’s presence means the Browns will have their regular offensive line alignment for another critical contest. Inactive for the Browns are S Juan Thornhill, LB Anthony Walker, CB Kahlef Hailassie, LB Jordan Kunaszyk, EDGE Ogbo Okoronkwo, C Luke Wypler and EDGE Isaiah McGuire.

Browns LG Joel Bitonio (back) is questionable for Week 16 against the Texans.
Bitonio practiced in a limited capacity this week and appears iffy to play against Houston. His absence would be a considerable loss to a Browns offensive line that has done a solid job of protecting the statuesque Joe Flacco over the past three weeks. The Texans defense will be missing key starters, however.

Browns LG Joel Bitonio (back) did not practice on Thursday.
Bitonio hurt his back early in the first quarter of last week’s win over the Bears and did not return. He has now yet to practice this week, which is not a good sign for his availability on Sunday, which would mean that RG Wyatt Teller could be the only starting offensive lineman from the beginning of this season out on the field for Cleveland. That’s not great news with immobile Joe Flacco at quarterback against a Texans defense that sacked Will Levis seven times last week and will be getting Will Anderson Jr. and Blake Cashman back.

Browns LG Joel Bitonio (back) left Sunday’s game against the Bears and was unable to return.
Bitonio seemed to injury himself on a blocking play with 6:08 remaining in the first quarter, taking a knee on the field and then being helped off by trainers. “My back’s messed up,” Bitonio said after the game. “I don’t know exactly what happened, but not feeling good.” With Bitonio out, RG Wyatt Teller was the only starting offensive lineman from the beginning of this season out on the field for Cleveland. The Browns keep winning, but the injuries are starting to mount before a crucial showdown against the Texans next weekend.

Browns LG Joel Bitonio (knee) returned to practice Wednesday.
Bitonio missed Week 6 with the knee issue. His Wednesday practice will likely go down as a limited session, but it still gives him a good shot at playing in Week 7. With Phillip Walker likely starting again, the Browns will need all of the help they can get in the trenches.
