USC HC Clay Helton said there are “ongoing conversations” with regards to the opt-out decisions of redshirt junior DL Jay Tufele.
As of now, there is no indication that either Tufele or redshirt junior OL Alijah Vera-Tucker will opt back in to the fall season. Both players opted out some time in August and have yet to rescind that action upon the Pac-12’s return. Helton, however, said neither decision is completely set in stone and that there are “ongoing conversations” with both players to potentially bring them back to play this fall. Expect updates on these two players over the coming weeks as the Pac-12 season finally approaches.

USC redshirt junior DT Jay Tufele opted out and will begin prepping for the 2021 NFL Draft.
Tufele (6'3/305) gave himself a little time to think through his options after the Pac-12 postponed the fall campaign, but he’s now settled on his next move. Rather than wait until a potential spring season of college ball, he’ll instead charge toward the 2021 NFL Draft. The redshirt junior was a first-team All-Pac-12 performer last season, putting in 41 tackles (5.5 for loss) and 3.5 sacks for the campaign. While the first round might be a bridge too far for Tufele in terms of draft range, he should very much be in play for a potential Day 2 selection with a strong spring in the evaluating process. On the USC side of this equation, HC Clay Helton and staff will have at least until the winter to make depth chart adjustments as needed.

USC redshirt junior DT Jay Tufele announced that he will return to campus in 2020.
Tufele (6'3/305) has dealt with injuries during his time in Troy, but he’s also already emerged as one of USC’s best defenders. The first-team All-Pac 12 honoree recorded 4.5 sacks last fall. He’s shown to be a plus against both the run and pass.

USC redshirt sophomore DT Jay Tufele left the San Diego Credit Union Holiday Bowl with an undisclosed injury in the fourth quarter.
The injury occured on a Nathan Stanley touchdown throw for Iowa, and Tufele (6'3/305) was slow to get up. It’s a huge loss, as Tufele is one of the best defenders for the Trojans, and USC has struggled to stop the Hawkeyes even with him. There should be an update on his status after the game.

Rivals recruiting analyst Josh Helmholdt notes that uncommitted four-star 2017 DT Jay Tufele offers a blend of run-stopping prowess and pass-rushing acumen.
“Tufele showed all week [during Army All-American Bowl practices] he is one of the rare defensive tackles who can [both maintain gap responsibility and rush the quarterback],” Helmholdt writes. The 6-foot-2, 306-pounder registered four tackles in this past weekend’s Army All-American Bowl. Scout.com’s Greg Biggins refers to Tufele as a “relentless player with a non-stop motor.” The five programs in the running for his commitment are Utah, Michigan, Ohio State, USC and BYU.

Rivals considers USC redshirt freshman DT Jay Tufele a “rare prospect.”
Tufele landed on Rivals list of the redshirt freshman to watch for 2018. Mike Farrell explains that TUfele is “a guy who could play inside or outside and can get after the passer with good size. His agility and athleticism stand out and he’s now ready to show off the skillset we loved so much out of high school.” Tufele is off to a good start after recording a sack in the season opener against UNLV.
