NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports the Rams have hired former Chargers interim head coach Giff Smith as their defensive line coach/run game coordinator.

Smith served as the Chargers’ interim head coach for the final three weeks of the season after the team fired Brandon Staley. Smith went 0-3 during his time with the Chargers but was being targeted by several teams during this coaching cycle. Now, with the Rams, Smith will continue to coach at So-Fi Stadium, which serves as the home to both the Rams and Chargers.

The Chargers named outside linebackers coach Giff Smith as their interim head coach.

Following their embarrassing loss at the hands of the Raiders on Thursday Night Football, the Chargers parted ways with head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco. Director of Player Personnel JoJo Wooden was named the interim general manager. Smith has been with the team as a position coach on the defensive side of the ball since 2016. He will be tasked with landing the plane on a lost season. A good finish to the year could earn him a more prestigious job elsewhere in the league.
