Former Lions draft pick Fred Matua has passed away at age 28.
A seventh-round pick out of USC in 2006, Matua is believed to have died from a heart attack or aneurysm, recently requiring emergency surgery. Matua has been out of the league since 2008 training camp. He was a starting guard in college.

Redskins signed G Fred Matua and DT Zarnell Fitch.
The team released defensive lineman J.T. Mapu and offensive lineman Kerry Brown. They needed healthy bodies on both lines due to early camp injuries.
  • DET Wide Receiver
Redskins released WR Billy McMullen, WR Horace Grant, LB Curtis Gatewood, LB David Holloway, CB Cedrick Holt, G Fred Matua, and WR Maurice Mann.
The Skins aren’t placing Malcolm Kelly (knee) on injured reserve yet, so McMullen got the axe. Matua played at USC, Holloway at nearby Maryland.
  • WAS Guard
Lions signed seventh-round G Fred Matua of USC to a multi-year contract.
Two of Matua’s college linemates, Deuce Lutui and Winston Justice, were taken in the early rounds. Matua will have to fight for a roster spot in camp.

Browns signed G Fred Matua and released DB Antonio Perkins.
Matua was a seventh-round pick by Detroit who later caught on with Tennessee’s practice team. He’ll add depth to a poor interior line. Perkins, a former fourth-round pick they tried at safety, has been a bust.
  • Browns RG Seth McKinney is expected to be a starter this season.
He’d make one cheap starter on Cleveland’s line. Ryan Tucker and Kevin Shaffer will presumably compete at right tackle if Shaffer is not traded. The team also has decent prospects in Fred Matua and Isaac Sowells.
  • WAS Guard
Lions selected USC G Fred Matua with the No. 217 pick in the NFL Draft.
Either NFL teams forgot about Matua or draft analysts vastly overprojected him. Most had the ex-Trojan going in the middle rounds at the latest.
