Waugh’s exact role in San Francisco has not been reported yet. He spent nearly 20 years in San Francisco and held the title of VP of Player Personnel before rejoining Trent Baalke in Jacksonville in 2022. Baalke was fired this offseason and Waugh took on the mantle of interim general manager for a few months before the Jags showed him the door.

Waugh had been with the Jaguars since 2022, with Trent Baalke as the team’s general manager. He was the interim general manager until James Gladstone was permanently hired to the role. Waugh was tied to the Baalke regime and though he stayed on through the draft, he now parts ways with the Jaguars.

According to Walters, those candidates include Josh Williams and James Gladstone, who are directors of scouting for the 49ers and Rams, respectively. Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham is also a finalist, as is Packers’ VP of player personnel, Jon-Eric Sullivan. Perhaps the most interesting finalist on this list is Jaguars interim GM Ethan Waugh, who has familiarity with those in the building but also worked closely with former GM Trent Baalke, whose firing appeared to have a direct impact on head coach Liam Coen’s willingness to join the team. Walters reports the Jaguars are expected to make a decision on GM by the end of the week.

The Jags finally cut ties with GM Trent Baalke after seeing the biggest names of the coachcing cycle take jobs elsewhere. Waugh will be tasked with picking through the leftovers to replace Doug Pederson. The team will almost certainly let the new head coach pick his general manager, meaning Waugh isn’t long for this job. Waugh was hired by Baalke as an assistant general manager in 2022.
