Bills released DE Eric Powell on Tuesday.
The Bills have just three healthy DEs after the surprising move, so it’s likely they have someone lined up to take Powells’ place. They now have two open roster spots.
  • HOU Defensive Lineman
Bills coach Dick Jauron estimates that third DE Ryan Denney (foot surgery) should be back after the team’s Week 6 bye.
The Bills would’ve placed Denney on injured reserve some time ago if they didn’t feel confident he’ll recovery quickly. Untested DE Eric Powell is filling in.
  • BUF Defensive Lineman
Bills DEs Aaron Schobel and Chris Kelsay will play more early in the season following the losses of Ryan Denney and Anthony Hargrove.
Instead of incorporating C.J. Ah You and Eric Powell into the rotation, the Bills will simply have their starters play more. Already a strong DL1, Schobel should be an especially consistent source of tackles in the first four games.
  • HOU Defensive Lineman
The suspension of Anthony Hargrove opens the door for Eric Powell to win the No. 4 defensive end spot in Buffalo.
The Bills prefer to use a four-man rotation at DE to keep everyone fresh. A product of FSU and NFL Europe, Powell was inactive all last season. Seventh-round pick C.J. Ah You will be his competition for the roster spot.
  • HOU Defensive Lineman
Texans signed DE Eric Powell, RB Arliss Beach, CB Derrick Roberson, CB Derrick Johnson, S Brandon Mitchell, C Greg Eslinger, and LB Kevis Coley to reserve/future contracts.
Powell made the Bills out of training camp in 2007, but was released one week into the season. These players will be on Houston’s offseason roster.
  • HOU Defensive Lineman
    Texans released DE Eric Powell.
Powell was signed during the offseason to provide depth, but the Texans need his roster spot for their rookie signings. Powell could catch on elsewhere, but the 80-man roster limit won’t help.
