Ummm. What? 51-year-old former Heisman Trophy winner George hasn’t so much as been on an NFL sideline since 2004, when he handled 141 touches for the Cowboys. He began his coaching career in 2021 at FCS Tennessee State. He went 15-18 his first three seasons before making the 24-team FCS playoffs this year. He was eliminated in the first round. George must still be well regarded in NFL circles, but the game has undergone several different transformations since he last played, while four years in the championship subdivision isn’t exactly the best coaching primer for the big leagues. The Bears are trying to conduct an “unorthodox” coaching search, but at this point, it’s just getting kooky. This isn’t productive. We wouldn’t be feeling reassured if we were Bears fans or players right now.

It looks like George’s stay in Dallas is only going to last one season.

George cited Emmitt Smith’s recent success, a dicey argument. George may actually get his wish with the Cowboys possibly going more conservative in the next few weeks.

It just won’t be in Dallas. He could head back to Tennessee if he doesn’t mind being the backup.

He should be able to find a backup job. It’s possible Tennessee could want him back if George could put his ego aside, like Jerome Bettis this season.

Defensive end Kevin Carter and wide receiver Derrick Mason will be in Hawaii attending the annual meeting of the NFL Players Association. Safety Lance Schulters, kicker Joe Nedney and cornerback Andre Woolfolk are also recovering from surgeries and will be very limited.

There is still a chance that George could be released after June 1st if the team cannot restructure his current $4.25 million deal. It’s more likely that George will remain with the team, but not gain over 1,000 yards again.

It’s draft season, stupid. The Titans are likely also waiting to see how George’s rehab goes before re-negotiating. Coach Jeff Fisher, on the NFL Network last night, said he can’t imagine the two sides won’t find a way to make sure George is playing for the Titans next season.

George’s salary cap figure currently stands at $7.32 million. We still expect George to remain in Tennessee, but his departure is a real possibility. The Titans wouldn’t be forced to make until after July 4th, when teams traditionally begin to sign their rookies.

It appears George will accept a significant pay cut and stay with the team. He will have to earn carries over second-year pro Chris Brown.
