The Packers are expected to keep only three running backs this season.
P.J. Pope and Arliss Beach are most likely the odd men out with Vernand Morency and Brandon Jackson pretty secure. That would leave Noah Herron and seventh-round rookie DeShawn Wynn fighting for the third and final spot.
  • NO Running Back
Packers signed seventh-round pick DeShawn Wynn.
The running back out of Florida is expected to battle Noah Herron for the third tailback roster spot in Green Bay. He’s struggled with some injuries thus far as a pro, a problem dating back to his college days. We’re interested to see how Wynn’s elite skills combo (4.45 speed/225-pound body) is made to mesh with the Packers’ one-cut, zone-blocking ground system.
  • NO Running Back
Packers RB DeShawn Wynn will sit out the team’s next exhibition game.
He isn’t going to make the club over Noah Herron at this rate. His quad injury has now lasted over a week. Wynn, who coach Mike McCarthy says he hopes is ready for the third exhibition contest, has two weeks left until first cuts.
  • NO Running Back
DeShawn Wynn was not on the Packers’ Week 4 injury report despite suffering an apparent ankle injury in last Sunday’s victory.
If Vernand Morency (knee) is able to play Sunday, Wynn figures to be among Green Bay’s inactives. The Packers won’t keep four backs up on game day.
  • GB Running Back
Despite missing practice Thursday due to soreness in his knee, Vernand Morency is expected to play in Week 6 against Washington.
It sounds like he’ll be listed as probable and Brandon Jackson will likely be inactive. The Packers’ committee will mostly consist of Morency and DeShawn Wynn, with the latter a better fantasy play as Green Bay’s likely starter and goal-line back. Wynn is a usable flex option in all leagues.
  • FA Running Back #27
Brandon Jackson (shin) returned to a full practice Wednesday and has been removed from the Packers’ injury report.
Jackson has not played in a game since Week 4, but is on track to return against Washington. His return adds more uncertainty to Green Bay’s RB committee. Rookie DeShawyn Wynn has been starting of late, and the Green Bay Press-Gazette questions whether Jackson will be active over Ryan Grant.
  • NO Running Back
DeShawn Wynn (neck) made it through another complete practice Friday.
The rookie is listed as probable on the injury report. Denver’s run defense looked improved in Week 7 against Pittsburgh, but Wynn makes for a sound flex play because he’s the favorite for touches in Green Bay’s backfield.
  • DEN Running Back
Packers RB P.J. Pope injured his knee in a full-contact workout during a scrimmage on Saturday night.
The extent of the injury was not revealed, but the Packers say it’s a sprain that could keep him out of action for a little while. Pope is battling Noah Herron, DeShawn Wynn, and Corey White for the No. 3 halfback job.
  • GB Running Back
Vernand Morency is a starter, according to the Packers’ opening depth chart of training camp.
This was expected because Morency is the incumbent. But the depth chart indicates DeShawn Wynn and Brandon Jackson are battling for No. 2 duties. Morency’s knee injury seemingly hasn’t hurt his status in the team’s eyes yet.
  • GB Running Back
Vernand Morency (knee) is listed as questionable for Week 1 and did not practice at all on Friday.
It now appears as though Morency suffered a setback. Coach Mike McCarthy said that Morency felt a “twinge” in his hamstring during Thursday’s workout and is feeling sore. Either rookie DeShawn Wynn or newcomer John Kuhn would likely take his place as Green Bay’s situational third-down back.
