North Carolina senior WR Dazz Newsome declared for the 2021 NFL Draft.
Newsome is going to be a nice find for an NFL team looking for a dangerous WR from the slot. At 5-foot-11, 190-pounds, Newsome is typical slot WR size and has all the athletic tools to go with it. Newsome flies off the line of scrimmage with good burst and is a bit of a nuisance to bring down in the open field once he gets the ball. If anything will hold Newsome down, it’s that he is not the biggest or toughest player, so perhaps teams like the Los Angeles Rams, who like their WRs to be good blockers, will not be too interested. Newsome grabbed 54 passes for 684 yards and six touchdowns in 2020. Look for Newsome to be an early Day 3 pick.

  • Wide Receiver #84
North Carolina senior WR Dazz Newsome caught six passes for 82 yards with a touchdown in a 49-9 win on Saturday over Western Carolina.
Unsurprisingly, Newsome (5'11/190) blew past the Catamounts’ defense, and did all of his damage in the first half. His touchdown was a 26-yarder with just 26 seconds left in the first two periods that gave the Tar Heels a 42-3 lead. Newsome has scored five times in 2020, and can add to that total next Saturday against Miami.

  • Wide Receiver #84
North Carolina senior WR Dazz Newsome caught 10 passes for 189 yards and two touchdowns in a 59-53 win over Wake Forest on Saturday.
Newsome (5'11/190) burned a shell-shocked Wake Forest secondary for big play touchdown receptions of 44 and 75 yards. It was a long overdue explosion from UNC’s 2019 receiving leader, as his previous single game high was just 69 yards back on October 10th in a 56-45 victory over Virginia Tech. The senior slot receiver’s 100-yard outing helped UNC overcome a 21-point third quarter deficit, with the Tarheels scoring five consecutive second-half touchdowns to pull out the thrilling comeback win. Newsome will try to keep the good times rolling on Friday, November 27 when North Carolina takes on Notre Dame in a big ACC showdown.

  • Wide Receiver #84
North Carolina senior WR Dazz Newsome brought in seven passes for 69 yards and a touchdown and added a rushing touchdown on Saturday in a 56-45 victory over Virginia Tech.
Newsome’s “rushing” touchdown was a pass for all intents and purposes, but since Sam Howell’s throw technically went behind the line of scrimmage, it counts as a rushing score. His receiving score was a 12-yard connection from Howell where the receiver did most of the work. Newsome had been very quiet in the first two games of the year, but showed off the talent that made him a thousand-yard receiver with 10 scores in 2019. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound wideout should be active again against Florida State next Saturday.

  • Wide Receiver #84
North Carolina junior WR Dazz Newsome announced he will return to school for the 2020 season.
Newsome wasn’t necessarily expected to declare, but it’s also noteworthy when a player makes an official decision one way or another. Newsome had a breakout junior year, earning over 1,000 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns. At 5-foot-11, 190-pounds, Newsome isn’t the best mismatch, but he does well to gain separation at all levels of the field. Newsome caught the go-ahead score to upset Miami early in the season.
  • Wide Receiver #84
North Carolina junior WR Dazz Newsome caught eight passes for 71 yards and two touchdowns in Friday’s 55-13 win over Temple in the Military Bowl.
Newsome (5'11/190) hauled in a 16-yard touchdown toss in the second quarter and a 29-yard touchdown toss in the fourth quarter. That fourth-quarter score was as good as you’ll see in bowl season. The junior made the grab while blanketed by two defenders as he drifted toward the left corner of the end zone, just getting his left foot down before tumbling out of bounds. Newsome ends his 2019 season having caught 72 passes for 1,018 yards and 10 touchdowns in 12 games. While Newsome is eligible to declare for the draft, we would love to see him come back for one more campaign in this developing offense. Particularly given that the wideout would likely be looking at a late Day 3 selection, at best, in April.
  • Wide Receiver #84
North Carolina junior WR Dazz Newsome caught seven passes for 130 yards and a touchdown in a 41-10 victory over NC State on Saturday.
Newsome (5'11"/190) closed out the year on a hot streak posting 100-yards receiving in four-of-his-last-five games. He has touchdown receptions in five-of-his-last six games and finishes the regular season with 64 receptions for 947 yards and eight touchdowns in eleven games. Interestingly, Newsome and fellow Tarheel wide-out Dyami Brown both finished the regular season with exactly 947 yards to share the team lead. The win makes UNC bowl eligible in HC Mack Brown’s first season at the helm.
  • Wide Receiver #84
North Carolina junior WR Dazz Newsome will not play in Saturday’s game vs. Mercer as he has been suspended for one game.
Newsome (5'11/190) made the mistake of oversleeping and missing a practice this week, so HC Mack Brown has decided to sit him for Saturday’s game. The junior, who has caught 57 passes for 817 yards and seven touchdowns, will be available next week when the Tar Heels visit NC State.
  • Wide Receiver #84
North Carolina junior WR Dazz Newsome brought in 11 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown in a 34-27 overtime loss to Pittsburgh on Thursday.
Newsome (5'11/190) was everywhere on Thursday, and the junior wideout deserved better than an overtime loss. The touchdown was a 34-yard strike from Sam Howell that brought the Tar Heels to within a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Newsome now has gone over the century mark in three-of-four games, and the touchdown is the seventh of the season. He should get plenty of targets next Saturday until the game gets ugly against Mercer.
  • Wide Receiver #84
North Carolina junior WR Dazz Newsome brought in four passes for 103 yards and a touchdown in Saturday’s 20-17 win over Duke.
Newsome, famed for his late touchdown catch to upset Miami earlier this year, came through with a different kind of big performance on Saturday. Rather than some last-second heroics, it was Newsome’s chunk plays in the first half that allowed UNC to get out to their early lead. Newsome (5'11/190) now has two straight 100-yard games. North Carolina will take on Virginia a week from now.
