NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports “there is interest” in the Panthers head coaching job.
Garafolo implied there’s more interest than he would have guessed, considering Carolina’s volatile owner, David Tepper, their undersized quarterback, Bryce Young and organization’s lack of draft capital. Garafolo said the goal of the next Carolina head coach will be to “surround [Young] with talent,” though it’s unclear how the team would pull that off. The Panthers job is one of the least appealing in recent NFL memory.
  • Panthers request permission to interview eight candidates for vacant head coach position.
The Panthers are set to undergo a major overhaul ahead of the 2024 season, which begins with their vacant head coaching position. Included in the requests were Lions OC Ben Johnson, Texans OC Bobby Slowik, Dolphins OC Frank Smith, Bengals OC Brian Callahan, Buccaneers OC Dave Canales, Rams DC Raheem Morris, Ravens DC Mike Macdonald, Cowboys DC Dan Quinn, and Ravens OC Todd Monken.
  • Fox Sports’ Peter Schrager reports the Panthers have requested permission to interview Buccaneers assistant GM Mike Greenberg for their GM vacancy.
Greenberg has been with the Buccaneers since 2010 but wasn’t promoted to assistant general manager until 2023. A long-time front office guy, Greenberg has spent time as the Buccaneers’ vice president of football administration, director of football administration, and coordinator of football administration, per his team bio. According to an article by Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Greenberg was instrumental in helping the Buccaneers “pivot to a win-now model during Tom Brady’s three years,” and he brings a wealth of knowledge from the salary cap side of operations.
  • The NFL fined Panthers owner David Tepper $300,000 for throwing a drink on a Jaguars fan during Week 17.
Tepper angrily threw a drink at a Jaguars fan during the Panthers’ Week 17 loss to the Jaguars, leading to discipline from the league office. The owner has helmed a Panthers team that is 2-14 heading into Week 18 without its own first overall pick in 2024. Tepper’s frustrations have led to a $300,000 fine from the NFL, a small percentage of his net worth as his team looks to the future.
  • NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports new Panthers owner David Tepper is “committed to keeping the team in Charlotte.”
RapSheet adds Tepper is “aiming to keep stability on all fronts,” meaning coach Ron Rivera and GM Marty Hurney are safe and he is not looking for a new stadium. A hedge fund manager who had been a minority owner of the Steelers, Tepper agreed to a deal to purchase the Panthers for $2.2 billion on Tuesday. He will need to sell his stake in the Steelers and be approved by the other owners before the sale is final.
  • David Tepper purchased the Carolina Panthers for $2.2 billion.
It is a record price for an NFL franchise. The deal is expected to be finalized on Tuesday, although Tepper still has to sell his minority stake in the Steelers and be approved by the other owners, who meet next week. Considering he was already a minority owner, that process should be a formality. A hedge fund manager with an estimated net worth of $11 billion, Tepper is a Pittsburgh native who reportedly wants to model his new franchise after the Steelers.
