Sills

Sills continues to try and catch on to a 53-man roster but will be left off the Giants’ final lineup. Sills had a solid preseason for the G-Men, totaling eight receptions for 117 yards and one touchdown, which included a solid 6-81-1 line in the final game. In addition to Sills, the Giants also released/waived QB Tommy DeVito, RB Jashaun Corbin, WR Kalil Pimpleton, TE Ryan Jones, OT Tyre Phillips, DT Ryder Anderson, DT Kobe Smith, DE Habakkuk Baldonado, LB Darrian Beavers, LB Tomon Fox, LB Ray Wilborn, LB Dyontae Johnson, CB Gemon Greeen, S Alex Cook, LS Cameron Lyons, LB Oshane Ximines, WR Jamison Crowder, WR Cole Beasley, CB Amani Oruwariye, and C Sean Harlow.

Sills played heavily for the Giants in the first seven weeks of the season, getting over 43% of the snaps in each of their first five games before being moved out of the rotation. He finished with a 11/106/0 line in 270 offensive snaps. Also signing reserve/future deals with the Giants are: DB Terrell Burgess, DT Vernon Butler, RB Jashaun Corbin, OT Korey Cunningham, DB Zyon Gilbert, OT Devery Hamilton, OL Solomon Kindley, WR Jaydon Mickens, WR Dre Miller, TE Chris Myarick, WR Kalil Pimpleton, WR Makai Polk, and DB Trenton Thompson.

Even with receiver injuries piling up in New York, Sills has just three catches in the past two weeks. Sills was on the periphery of the fantasy radar heading into Week 5. He doesn’t have a pulse for Week 6.

Like all Giants’ pass catchers, there was no chance (or need) for Sills in a game where Saquon Barkley dominated. Sills continues to have a rotational role, but a real passing game will keep him from ever being fantasy relevant.

After playing 92% of the Week 2 snaps, Sills rotated more evenly with Kenny Golladay as the third wideout behind Sterling Shepard and Richie James in this one. Sills was targeted on the final play of the game for the G-Men but fell down while breaking off his route, and the pass was picked off by Trevon Diggs. Sills doesn’t belong anywhere near fantasy rosters despite his playing time.

Sills has seen in role in the offense increase each week. He has become the next receiver to jump Kadarius Toney in the pecking order. Sills at this point is just a rotational receiver and has no real fantasy relevance.

Daboll made it a point to clarify both Johnson and Sills were in the mix to see the field and not just to make the Giants’ roster. Sills has been in the NFL since 2019 and has two career catches for 17 yards. He began his career with the Bills. At the time, Daboll was Buffalo’s offensive coordinator. Johnson, a fifth-round pick in 2020, earned some playing time with the Jags as a rookie. He totaled 18 catches for 272 yards but was waived a year later. He joined the Giants last year. Neither player has a shot at being relevant for fantasy purposes, but Daboll’s praise of the duo could be taken as an indictment of Kenny Golladay. Going as a WR6 in fantasy drafts, Golladay’s is clearly factored into his bargain-bin price.

Another exclusive rights free agent, Sills caught two balls in four games for the Giants last year, playing 98 snaps. With Kenny Golladay, Sterling Shepard, and Kadarius Toney set as New York’s three-wide set and players like Darius Slayton and John Ross also ahead of Sills, it seems unlikely Sills will fall into real playing time next season.

Presumably Sills will play in Week 18 against the Football Team. A preseason DFS stud, Sills -- a slot receiver -- caught seven of 15 targets for 94 yards and a touchdown in three preseason appearances. He has two receptions for 17 yards in the regular season.

Sills was a very productive player with Will Grier at West Virginia, and he showed decent athleticism (37.5-inch vertical) at the Combine, so he’s a player that should land on a practice squad after clearing waivers. Sills’ absolute ceiling is a No. 2/3 possession receiver who makes his biggest impact on third downs and in the red zone.
