Coach Jim Haslett said if Howard checks out, he will start ahead of rookie Will Smith.

Still, this is positive news for a Saints defense that needs it. Will Smith will likely get the start again, but was very quiet in week one.

First-round pick Will Smith will step in for Howard, but it would be a big loss for New Orleans.

An MRI exam revealed a bulging disc in his lower neck. Standout rookie Will Smith will start if Howard can’t play.

The “franchise” defensive end will miss his third game of the season, but return November 7th, after the Saints bye week. Howard has four sacks and a forced fumble in four games.

We’re not sure if that’s true, but maybe Howard is closer to 100%. IDP owners can look for an improved second half.

He had 11 sacks this season and should be one of the top players on the market. But New Orleans has three productive ends, including rookie Will Smith, who can cheaply fill in for Howard.

He’ll make $7.8 million next season. Howard had a career-high 11 sacks despite missing three games in 2004. He is one of the most consistent ends in the league and an underrated IDP force. It’s slightly possible the Saints could deal him for the right price.

New Orleans is looking for help at linebacker, safety, and backup running back.

The Saints will have their best defensive player on the field for the first time all season.
