Kyu Blu Kelly was claimed off waivers from the Packers in a corresponding move. Johnson signed a two-year, $7 million contract with the Commanders this offseason. Johnson had 17 tackles and one pass breakup while also contributing on special teams. He will likely clear waivers and become a free agent.

Johnson will earn $2.75 million in guaranteed money on his new deal, as the Commanders bring back a long-time member of their defense and special teams unit. Johnson Has been lightly used on the defensive side of the ball through five seasons but earned a PFF coverage grade of 80.1 on 292 snaps last season.

Johnson, re-signed by Washington in March, served as a slot corner for some of the 2021 season and as an occasional kicker returner. His special teams experience could help Johnson find his way onto another roster in the coming days.

Johnson saw more coverage snaps in 2021 than he did in his previous three years combined, mostly in the slot. He also has returner experience. The Commanders will again call on him as a depth piece with special-teams value in 2022.

The team initially elected to forego tendering the 25-year-old restricted free agent. Johnson returned 26 kicks in 2020, averaging 22.0 yards per return. This upcoming season will be his fourth in the league.
