Branch is expected to give way to Davis before the season begins, but has played with the first team throughout practice and the first preseason game. ''I’m realistic and I know there might be a bump down the depth chart,’' Branch said. ''But who knows what’s going to happen during the season?’'

Branch got back in Carolina’s good graces with a strong off-season. If Branch is seriously hurt, Thomas Davis could move back to safety.

Branch visited with the Bengals on Tuesday. The versatile but oft-injured fourth-year player could back up Stuart Schweigert in Oakland.

Branch was no longer needed with B.J. Ward’s emergence. Tucker appears to be close to done in the NFL. Clauss could be of interest elsewhere.

The former Panther has decent coverage ability, but isn’t a great tackler. He will be battling to make the team.

Branch blew out his knee in the 2005 preseason. When he’s fully healed, the fourth-year veteran could push Shaun Williams or Mike Minter to be a Panthers first-teamer.

He’s “day-to-day” and is likely to be listed as questionable this week.

Branch has another year on his rookie contract. He should be back next season, probably as a reserve free safety.

Branch was the likely starting free safety for Carolina. The team could move Thomas Davis back to strong safety, and slide Mike Minter over. The other options are Marlon McCree and newly signed Idrees Bashir.
