Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said “We’re not having those conversations right now” when asked if Christian Barmore will be able to play football again.
Barmore reportedly is dealing with recurring symptoms from the blood clots that forced him to miss most of this season. Mayo added: “I feel for Barmore. He did everything right.” It sure sounds as if the Patriots should go into this offseason not relying on Barmore for 2025. Barmore signed an extension in April that ties him to the roster that won’t allow the Patriots to save any money on a release through next season, so they’ll likely give him more runway for a comeback next season. Hopefully he’s able to shake the symptoms and return to the field at some point.

Patriots placed DT Christian Barmore on the reserve non-football illness list.
Barmore opened the year on the NFI list after being treated for blood clots in the offseason. In a statement released by the Patriots, the team said Barmore “experienced some recurring symptoms that required further evaluation,” which led to the decision to return him to the NFI list. Barmore, 25, appeared in four games for the Patriots this season, totaling six tackles and one sack. He signed a four-year, $92 million contract extension in April and will hopefully be back in time for the start of next season.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez (hip) is likely to play in Week 12 against the Dolphins.
The same is true of defensive lineman Christian Barmore, who was listed as questionable after missing two practices for non-injury reasons this week. Barmore was added tot he injury report with a hip issue on Friday, causing some concern for his Week 12 availability. The Pats remain significant underdogs to the Dolphins this week, but getting the young duo of Barmore and Gonzalez on the field is a small boost to a defensive unit that has struggled this year.

Patriots activated DT Cristian Barmore from injured reserve, according to Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald.
Kyed notes that Barmore’s absence from practice on Friday won’t preclude him from suiting up on Sunday. Barmore was placed on the NFI list after dealing with blood clots. The former second round pick had a career year last year and now all signs point to the Patriots getting a big piece for their defense back in Week 11 against the Rams.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Patriots DT Christian Barmore could practice for the first time on Thursday.
Barmore was placed on the NFI list earlier this offseason after it was revealed he was dealing with blood clots. The fourth-year tackle racked up a career-high 64 tackles last season and also tallied a career-high 8.5 sacks. He could still be a long way from returning to the playing field, but his return to the practice field is an encouraging sign when you consider that many thought he could miss all of the 2024 season when he was initially diagnosed.
  • NE Defensive Tackle #90
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports, “The Patriots are bracing for the possibility that DT Christian Barmore, who’s on reserve/non-football injury list while being treated for blood clots, won’t play this season.”
According to Fowler, the Patriots don’t want to rush Barmore’s recovery and won’t force him on the field until he’s fully ready to go. Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots back in late July and was placed on the reserve/NFI list during roster cutdowns. Barmore totaled a career-high 64 tackles and 8.5 sacks last season and was recently signed to a four-year contract extension. His absence would be a tough blow to a Patriots defense that ranked 15th last season and allowed the seventh-fewest yards per game.

Patriots placed DT Christian Barmore on the reserve/non-football injury list.
Safety Marte Mapu was placed on injured reserve. Both players have return designations meaning they could take the field later this season. Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots this offseason. There was no timetable for his return when the issue was announced at the start of camp, but the return designation bodes well for his recovery.
  • Patriots DT Christian Barmore was diagnosed with blood clots over the weekend.
The Patriots released a statement saying Barmore was treated at Mass General Brigham over the weekend and "[while] there is no current timetable for his return, we know Christian is getting tremendous care and we look forward to his full recovery.” Barmore anchors the Patriots’ talented defensive front. He was named to the 2021 PFWA All-Rookie Team before breaking out as a difference-making three-down player in 2023, totaling 8.5 NFL sacks and eight tackles for loss or no gain in run defense.
  • NE Defensive Lineman #90
Patriots signed DT Christian Barmore to a four-year, $92 million extension.
Barmore was heading into the final year of his deal and set to hear just over $2.71 million. Now, the former second-round pick who totaled a career-high 8.5 sacks and 13 TFLs last season will be under contract through 2028 and can earn up to $41.8 million in guaranteed money on his deal. Barmore has been a staple along the Patriots’ defensive line since being drafted in 2021, appearing in 44 of a possible 51 regular season games while consistently grading as one of the best interior pass rushers per PFF.

Patriots OT Trent Brown (ankle) was limited in practice on Wednesday.
The veteran missed Week 11 with what was marked as “personal/ankle” suggesting that the injured ankle is only part of the reason for his absence. His presence at practice in some capacity on Wednesday is a good sign, but his status remains murky. Also limited in practice for the Patriots on Wednesday were CB Jonathan Jones (knee), CB Myles Bryant (chest), DL Christian Barmore (knee), and LB Ja’Whaun Bentley (hamstring).
