Patriots signed P Chris Hanson and released P Danny Baugher.
The Pats continue to play musical chairs with punters. Hanson was in training camp with the Saints but lost out to incumbent Steve Weatherford. It appears New England will not have a rookie punting this year after all.
  • FA Punter #2
    Patriots waived P Tom Malone.
Chris Hanson would be New England’s punter if the season began today.
  • FA Punter #2
    Patriots released P Tom Malone.
Malone, no relation to Sam, was expected to compete with Chris Hanson for the team’s starting punter job.
  • Patriots agreed to terms with P Scott Player, formerly of the Browns.
Player was on Cleveland’s roster for about three weeks last season. The 38-year-old will compete with Chris Hanson in training camp to start.
  • Free agent P Chris Hanson is not expected back with New England.
Hanson, 33, finished 2009 ranked 34th in the NFL in net average (39.7). The Pats have been rumored as possible suitors for Michigan P Zoltan Mesko.
  • Patriots re-signed P Chris Hanson.
Hanson finished 2008 just 18th in net average, but has the Foxboro elements to deal with and put an outstanding 44% of his punts inside opponents’ 20-yard line. Tom Malone probably won’t give Hanson much of a run in camp.
  • The Jaguars signed punter Chris Hanson to a five-year, $6.5 million deal that includes a $1.3 million signing bonus.
Hanson was made famous as the victim of an ax chopping incident last season. He’ll be ready for next season.
