Eagles agreed to terms with CB C.J. Gardner-Johnson, formerly of the Lions, on a three-year contract.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports the deal is worth “up to” $33 million. It’s a badly-needed addition after the Eagles’ defense, particularly the back-end, fell apart down the stretch last season. CJGJ, of course, spent 2022 in Philadelphia and picked off a league-leading six passes. There has always been an element of hot and cold to Gardner-Johnson’s game — he’s not guaranteed to be a part of the solution — but he is a play-maker. It’s a worthy gamble for a team that needs to make a few.
  • DET Defensive Back #23
Lions HC Dan Campbell said DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson (pec) could being practicing next week.
Gardner-Johnson suffered a torn pectoral in the Lions’ Week 2 matchup against the Seahawks. The veteran has been on injured reserve ever since and was initially feared to be lost for the season. Now, Campbell says Gardner-Johnson has healed “extremely quickly” and the muscle “is secure.” When the Lions do open his window for return, Gardner-Johnson will have 21 days to be officially activated off injured reserve. While he could begin practicing next week, his return to the Sunday gridiron could be a few weeks away.
  • DET Defensive Back #23
Lions DB Chauncey Gardner-Johnson suffered a torn pectoral muscle Sunday and is out indefinitely.
Gardner-Johnson had been a mainstay on the back end for the Lions over the first two weeks but is now likely to miss the remainder of the season. The injury big has hit hard and often for the Lions to start the season, with running back David Montgomery, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Gardner-Johnson all leaving Sunday’s overtime loss to the Seahawks.
  • DET Defensive Back #23
ESPN’s Field Yates reports an MRI on Lions S C.J. Gardner-Johnson showed “no structural damage” to his knee.
Gardner-Johnson is officially considered day-to-day after Monday’s injury scare. The Lions safety was carted from Monday’s practice following a non-contact knee injury, but reports since the injury have been all positive. All things appear to be trending toward Gardner-Johnson returning to the field after a few days of rest.
  • DET Defensive Back #23
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports the non-contact knee injury suffered by Lions S C.J. Gardner-Johnson does not appear to be serious.
Per Pelissero, the Lions will conduct further tests on Gardner-Johnson to confirm the severity of the injury, but one of Pelissero’s sources said, “he’s fine” when questioned about the status of the veteran safety. We’ll know more on his injury shortly, but it sounds like Gardner-Johnson has avoided the worst case scenario.
  • DET Defensive Back #23
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports Lions S C.J. Gardner-Johnson suffered a non-contact knee injury on Monday.
According to Lions beat writer Tim Twentyman, Gardner-Johnson “went down with a right leg injury Monday & was carted off the field.” The Lions signed Gardner-Johnson to a one-year, $8 million contract this offseason in hopes of bolstering a defense that finished 28th in points allowed per game and allowed the third-most passing yards per game (245.8). We’ll likely get more news on Gardner-Johnson’s injury, but it sounds like this is something that could sideline him for quite some time.
  • Lions signed C.J. Gardner-Johnson, formerly of the Eagles, to a one-year, $8 million contract with $6.5 million in guarantees.
It’s a stunningly low contract for Gardner-Johnson, a consensus top-ten free agent on most public boards. Apparently the free agency money has already dried up after a few weeks, and the Eagles decided to prioritize James Bradberry and Darius Slay. Gardner-Johnson reunites with former Saints DBs coach Aaron Glenn, Detroit’s defensive coordinator, and should get another chance to cash in next offseason if he plays well.

  • NBC Houston’s Aaron Wilson reports the Broncos are amongst the teams interested in free agent CB C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
One of the better corners remaining on the open market, it would seem CGJ is on his way out of Philadelphia. The Broncos are the first team he has been linked to, but there are certainly more interested parties. It wouldn’t be surprising if he were one of the Thursday dominoes to fall.

  • NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports the Eagles are expected to “make a big push” to keep S Chauncey Gardner-Johnson this offseason.
Gardner-Johnson, who came over in a trade with the Saints and was moved to safety, had an IR stint in December but played to a 69.5 PFF coverage grade and picked off six passes in just 818 defensive snaps. The Eagles reportedly talked about the “long-term goals” with Gardner-Johnson when they acquired him from the Saints in August.

  • Eagles activated CB C.J. Gardner-Johnson (kidney) from injured reserve.
The same is true of Robert Quinn (knee scope). They’re two big returns for a defense that has lost a little of its bite down the stretch. Both will presumably be snap counted against the Giants on Sunday with an eye toward being ready for their regular roles after what should be a bye on Wild Card weekend. Although more of a nuisance than true difference-maker, Gardner-Johnson is a play-maker.
