Bengals RB Chase Brown (ankle) is inactive for Week 18 against the Steelers.
Brown came into the contest listed as questionable after injuring his ankle in the second half of the team’s Week 17 win. It was initially deemed a mild high-ankle injury, with him ultimately unable to overcome the pain enough to be active in a must-win game. Expect Kahlil Herbert to lead the backfield, with an offensive game plan likely biased towards the air. Also inactive for the Bengals are DE Sam Hubbard, WR Charlie Jones, WR Jermaine Burton, TE Tanner McLachlan, OL Andrew Stueber, and DE Isaiah Thomas.

Chase Brown will workout pre-game and attempt to play against the Steelers in Week 18, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Rapoport had previously reported that Brown “must improve greatly” to play this week. However, the 24-year-old running back participated in walkthrough Friday, which could be a good sign for his availability against the Steelers. Brown is still listed as questionable and will be a game-time decision. Even if he’s active, there’s the potential Brown won’t be able to make it through the game without re-injury, but he’s certainly going to try. Khalil Herbert would be the main beneficiary from Brown either being inactive or limited in Week 18.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Chase Brown (ankle) is “very sore, needs to improve greatly to be able to play” in Week 18 against the Steelers.
Brown is still technically labeled as questionable to play but Rapoport’s Friday night report is disheartening. Fantasy managers should expect Khalil Herbert to get the Week 18 start against the Steelers. Brown would be an RB1, if active, though at risk for re-injury.

Bengals RB Chase Brown (ankle) will be a game-time decision for Week 18 against the Steelers.
Rookie right tackle Amarius Mims will also be a game-time decision. When asked about the possibility of both players playing in the pivotal Week 18 matchup, head coach Zac Taylor said, “We’ll see.” It’s about what we’d expect from Taylor, who needs all hands on deck Saturday if he and the Bengals hope to sneak into the playoffs after a disappointing 2024. Brown was a DNP in all three practices this week, but it sounds like the Bengals will give him up until inactives are announced to decide whether or not he’ll play or if Khalil Herbert will serve as the team’s RB1 for the week.

Chase Brown (ankle) was not seen practicing Thursday.
We are rapidly approaching Khalil Herbert SZN. The severity of the ankle injury Brown suffered in Week 17 against the Broncos was downplayed the following day, but the optics weren’t great on the field. The Bengals’ RB1 was not able to practice at all this week, but we’ll see where things stand when they release their final injury report later in the day. It’s possible the Bengals are taking it easy on Brown ahead of a pivotal Week 18 matchup, but we’ll have some clarity on that soon.

Chase Brown (ankle) was not seen at the start of Wednesday’s practice.
This will presumably go down as another DNP for the young back. Brown was held out of Tuesday’s walkthrough as well. He still has a shot to suit up this week, but a limited session on Thursday may be required. Khalil Herbert will draw the start if he is made inactive for Week 18’s game against the Steelers.

Chase Brown (ankle) did not practice on Tuesday.
It was a walkthrough. The Bengals offered some hope yesterday from OC Dan Pitcher about Brown, but we’ll likely need to see him in practice on either of the next two days to even get to a questionable line. Khalil Herbert would start if Brown is unable to go.

Bengals OC Dan Pitcher said they are hopeful Chase Brown (ankle) will be available for Week 18 against the Steelers.
Brown suffered an ankle sprain in Saturday’s win over the Broncos, but initial reports suggested the injury is not considered to be major. The Bengals are still in the thick of the AFC playoff race and need all hands on deck if they hope to win out and sneak into the postseason. Brown has seen nearly every running back opportunity for the Bengals since Week 9. If Brown can’t go, Khalil Herbert, who was acquired at the deadline but quickly became a forgotten man in the Bengals offense, would be in line to start. Herbert rushed four times for 23 yards against the Broncos in relief of Brown in Week 17.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Chase Brown’s ankle injury is not considered major and he has a chance to play in Week 18 against the Steelers.
Brown sprained his ankle while sliding to the ground at the one-yard line late in the Bengals’ Week 17 win over the Broncos. He was going down to set up a game-winning field goal, only for the Bengals to punch it in with Joe Burrow on the next play. Brown remained on the field for a while before being helped off by trainers. What looked to be a potentially catastrophic injury at the time now seems much less serious. Khalil Herbert would draw the start with Brown sidelined. With the Bengals still in the playoff hunt, expect Brown to do everything he can to get back out there for Week 18 versus the Steelers.

Chase Brown rushed 20 times for 67 yards in the Bengals’ Week 17 win over the Broncos, adding 24 yards on four receptions.
Brown escaped for his longest rush of the game late in the fourth quarter in a tie game but attempted to slide down at the one to draw more time off the clock. His right cleat appeared to get stuck in the turf as he attempted the slide and he would stay down on the field with training staff for minutes before eventually walking under his own power to the sideline. He would not play another snap as the team saw three possessions in overtime, with Khalil Herbert handling the rest of the snaps in his stead. Fantasy managers considering playoff contests or sick enough to play in Week 18 championships will want to monitor his practice status in the coming week ahead of a meeting with the Steelers.
