    Buccaneers waived WR Cephus Johnson.
The 6'5" former quarterback attempted to make the transition to wide receiver at the professional level but didn’t do enough to stick with the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay’s wide receiver depth chart is rather thin behind established veterans Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, leaving fellow rookie Trey Palmer as the likeliest to contribute outside the top two.

South Alabama redshirt junior QB Cephus Johnson is entering the transfer portal.
Johnson’s future appeared so bright for the Jaguars not so long ago, a potential four-year starter, but despite his tools, Johnson couldn’t fix his accuracy woes in time and was swapped out for Desmond Trotter as the school’s quarterback of the future. Johnson ends his career with a completion percentage around 50% with an 8/8 TD/INT rate. It’s unclear whether or not he’ll graduate in time to earn the grad transfer delineation. If not, he’d likely have to sit out next fall if he stayed in the FBS. Johnson (6'5/220) is still big and can move around, so he should draw some interest on the open market. He may be FCS-bound if he’s dead-set on a starting QB job, however. Especially if he wants to play right away and hasn’t graduated.

South Alabama redshirt sophomore QB Cephus Johnson completed 3-of-11 passes for 9 yards in a 30-3 drubbing at the hands of Appalachian State.
Johnson (6'5/220) was pitiful in the loss, averaging under 1 yard per attempt and rushing for negative yardage for the hapless USA offense. Johnson is sporting a 5/7 touchdown-to-interception ratio on the year so not much was expected from him today. Still there’s no getting around the fact that he is not a viable long-term option at quarterback for the 1-7 Jaguars. South Alabama is on bye next week before facing Texas State on the road Week 11.

South Alabama redshirt sophomore QB Cephus Johnson completed just 20-of-38 passes for 183 yards and two interceptions in Wednesday night’s 37-13 loss to Troy.
A tumultuous 2019 campaign for Johnson (6'5"/220) continued on Wednesday. After his two interceptions versus Troy, Johnson has now thrown seven picks on the year to just five touchdowns. One of his interceptions on Wednesday was a rough pick six thrown to the left sideline in which there did not appear to be a Jaguar in sight. Maybe that was a miscommunication, but with a blunder that bad, the QB cannot go without blame. Hopefully Johnson can rebound against Appalachian State on Oct. 26.

South Alabama redshirt sophomore QB Cephus Johnson completed 8-of-15 passes for 194 yards with two touchdowns in a 20-17 loss to Georgia Southern on Thursday in overtime.
Well, the yardage-per-completion is nice. Both of Johnson’s touchdowns were beautifully thrown long passes; a 75-yarder to Kawaan Baker and a 60-yard strike to Jalen Tolbert. Outside of that, there wasn’t much good for the 6-foot-5, 220-pound signal-caller, and the Jaguars have now lost four straight in large part due to a not-so-good offensive performance. Johnson and the Jaguars have a bye next week, and then take on Troy the next Wednesday.

South Alabama redshirt sophomore QB Cephus Johnson completed 14-of-26 passes for 114 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in Saturday’s 30-17 loss at Louisiana-Monroe.
Johnson (6'5/220) salvaged the stat line with 21 runs for 72 yards and a pair of rushing scores in the loss, and he had just the one miscue. The passing game wasn’t terribly effective, but he was able to make some plays with his leg to keep the Jaguars in it until the fourth quarter. He’ll look to build on the momentum heading into next Saturday’s home game against Georgia Southern.

South Alabama redshirt sophomore QB Cephus Johnson completed 3-of-5 passes for seven yards while rushing for 41 yards on six attempts in Saturday’s 35-3 loss to UAB.
Johnson (6'5/220) has been working as starter this season, but that might not last for much longer. His passing totals have dropped every week since the opener and he has thrown for just 49 yards over his last two games. Outside of a nice little rushing output, there just wasn’t much doing here for the redshirt sophomore. Tylan Morton would be the man to replace Johnson should it come to that. South Alabama will take on UL-Monroe next weekend.

According to Creg Stephenson of AL.com, South Alabama redshirt sophomore QB Cephus Johnson is expected to start Saturday’s game vs. UAB.
Johnson (6'5/220) struggled mightily in last weekend’s 42-6 loss to Memphis, completing five of his 14 pass attempts for 42 yards while also rushing for another 37. The redshirt sophomore was eventually replaced by Tylan Morton, but while Morton did lead the Jaguars on their only scoring drive of the game he also threw an interception and did not put up great numbers, either. HC Steve Campbell said on Monday that he’s sticking with Johnson as his starter, but one has to wonder if that would remain the case if he struggles against the Blazers.

South Alabama redshirt sophomore QB Cephus Johnson completed 5-of-14 passes for 42 yards in Saturday’s 42-6 loss to Memphis.
Oh dear. Just, oh dear. Johnson (6'5/220) did provide a little on the ground, rushing for 37 yards, but it was a horrendous performance on the whole, to the point where he was benched for an equally ineffective Tylan Morton midway through the contest. The redshirt sophomore has raw physical ability, but remains a raw signal-caller on the whole. Just who will start between Johnson and Morton when the Jaguars take on UAB next Saturday will be determined over the course of the coming practice week.

South Alabama redshirt sophomore QB Cephus Johnson completed 11-of-18 passes for 120 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while adding a rushing touchdown in Saturday’s 37-14 win over Jackson State.
Despite the two picks, Johnson’s performance was decent enough to get by versus a middling FCS opponent. Johnson did punch in a one-yard run on the goal line for a score, but the two interceptions limited a small blowout from being a colossal blowout. When South Alabama get to the heart of their schedule, Johnson is going to have to be better about turning the ball over.
