Jaguars signed fourth-round pick Brian Smith to a four-year contract. The deal includes a signing bonus in the $450,000 range.
Smith was possibly the best pure pass rusher in Mizzou history but has frequently run into nagging injuries and is extremely undersized at 6-4/230. He’ll likely be asked to play a bit more with his hand up in Jacksonville.

Jaguars placed DE Brian Smith on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform list.
An oft-injured player at Mizzou, Smith couldn’t shake an in-camp hip injury. The fourth-round rookie will be eligible to return to the lineup in Week 7. This could clear the way for James Wyche to make the Jaguars’ roster.

Jaguars DE Reggie Hayward has been medically cleared to practice when the team opens camp Saturday.
Good news for the Jags and Hayward, who suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in Week 1 of 2006. The Jags also placed TE George Wrighster, QB Quinn Gray and fourth-round pick DE Brian Smith on the PUP list.
  • JAX Defensive Lineman
Jaguars placed DE Brian Smith on injured reserve, ending his season.
Smith injured his hip his senior season at Mizzou and had spent the first 12 weeks of the NFL season on the PUP list. He was an elite pass rusher in college, and should be ready to compete to join the DE rotation by camp.

Jaguars 2007 fourth-round pick Brian Smith still isn’t fully recovered from the broken hip he suffered as a college senior.
He spent last year on injured reserve and is likely on the roster bubble heading to camp. Smith, who set a Mizzou record for career sacks, has shed weight and is down to 235. Perhaps the Jags now view him as a linebacker.

Jaguars waived DE Brian Smith, WR Craphonso Thorpe, LS Brett Goode, TE Isaac Smolko, and T Ryan Gibbons.
Smith was the Jags’ fourth-round pick in 2007, but he missed his rookie season while recovering from a hip injury he sustained in college. He has also missed recent OTAs due to a leg injury.
