He was taken into custody at 2:30 AM after speeding by police and failing field sobriety tests. Hawkins said he had three vodka and orange juice drinks before getting behind the wheel. He’s the 10th Jaguar arrested since 2006.

Gardner is an undrafted free agent out of Maryland. The team waived defensive end Brent Hawkins to make room on the roster.

Both were 2006 draft picks who’ve done little in the pros. Spicer wants a pay raise because he’s in the last year of his contract and has been the Jags’ only reliable end for the past two seasons. Brent Hawkins, Kenneth Pettway, and Brian Smith all have next to no chance of making the Jaguars’ final roster.

Not a great sign for his chances of making the team, although they weren’t much better at defensive end. Hawkins’ January DUI also didn’t help. He had four sacks as a reserve in 2007, but may do less pass rushing at the SAM.

Hawkins is a ‘tweener from Illinois State who will likely have to show he can play outside linebacker. He could work on specials in his first year.

He had his second sack of the season Sunday, but his status for this week is uncertain.
