Ward

Darius, the former first-round pick by Jacksonville, was expected to make the team as a third safety. B.J. Ward beat him for that job.

The Raiders only have three safeties on their roster now, but gave a tryout to Jarrod Cooper recently. Ward, mostly a special teamer, made highlight reels after being run over on the goal line by Ronnie Brown in Week 4.

Ward started camp atop the depth chart at strong safety but couldn’t shake a bout with migraines. Cherry wouldn’t have made the team.

Following an extra point, Ward was ejected for making contact with an official. Ward was trying to separate teammate Ed Reed from Detroit’s Casey FitzSimmons after Reed pointed a finger in FitzSimmons’ face, apparently upset about a cut block.

The former Ravens reserve had a chance to start at strong safety last season before struggling with migraines. He’ll go from one Ryan brother to another as his defensive coordinator.
