ESPN’s John Clayton reports the Raiders have entered trade talks with the Lions concerning backup quarterback Josh McCown.
McCown has a big arm and is more mobile than Andrew Walter, but isn’t regarded as a smart QB that’s normally preferred in the West Coast attack coordinator Greg Knapp brought from Atlanta. If they can swing a deal for McCown, quarterback becomes a less pressing need at the top of the draft.

Marques Tuiasosopo was seen watching Raiders OTAs on Thursday, prompting speculation that he could be returning to Oakland.
Tui reportedly spent a lot of time with QBs coach John DeFilippo, and while Lane Kiffin wouldn’t comment, he said information could come later in the day. Tuiasosopo’s first stint with the Raiders was unimpressive, but the Contra Costa Times points out that his skill set fits the current scheme much better than Norv Turner’s. He’d push Andrew Walter for the No. 2 job.
  • NE Quarterback
Patriots signed QB Andrew Walter, formerly of the Raiders.
While New England has had success with Raider castoffs, we doubt it’ll happen here. Walter, 27, has a windup delivery, zero mobility, and is lacking in the accuracy department. Walter has a big arm, but needs all kinds of time to throw. He’ll be third string if he beats out rookie Brian Hoyer.

The Patriots released Andrew Walter back in September of last season because he was too big of a project, according to Yahoo’s Jason Cole.
“It was like six things [Walter] was doing wrong on every play,” a Patriots source told Cole. “It was impossible to coach him because there was too much to correct.” In other words, the Raiders didn’t do anything to develop the former third-round pick. Walter was out of football all of last season.

The Boston Herald’s Michael Felger reports that the Packers and Raiders are “on the verge” of announcing a trade that will send Randy Moss to the Packers.
It’s odd a Boston writer is breaking the story, but he’s also an ESPN radio host and from Wisconsin. We heard rumblings Wednesday night it was close and profootballtalk.com pegged most of these details days go. The deal will reportedly include Aaron Rodgers, Raiders TE Courtney Anderson, and a conditional Oakland pick in 2009 based on Rodgers’ production. Moss will reportedly restructure his deal to catch passes from Brett Favre. While this will help Moss’ numbers, don’t assume either Favre or he will be elite fantasy starters. Rodgers’ presence makes it more likely, though far from certain, that Oakland will draft Calvin Johnson with the first overall pick. In the end, this is a salary dump. Donald Driver and Greg Jennings owners can’t be happy.

Raiders released Aaron Brooks Thursday after they declined to pay a $5 million roster bonus on his contract.
Brooks, 31, was a passable NFL quarterback for the first five years of his career, but he’s struggled badly the last two seasons for New Orleans and Oakland. Brooks is still young and has plenty of starting experience. Behind Damon Huard, there may not be a better unrestricted free agent quarterback, but Brooks should only get offers to be backup. He’d do best in a West Coast system like in Minnesota or Tampa Bay. The Raiders are now freed to draft a quarterback or potentially look for a veteran in the trade market.
  • DET Quarterback
Raiders QB Daunte Culpepper completed 6-of-8 passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to the 49ers Saturday night.
Andrew Walter was 9-of-16 for 78 yards and an interception, and Josh McCown was 8-of-17 for 97 yards. Tonight’s performance gives Culpepper a chance to start in Week 1, but he still has only played with the reserves.
  • DET Quarterback
Raiders QBs Daunte Culpepper, Josh McCown and Andrew Walter have all been plagued by an inordinate amount of interceptions at camp.
The trio is reportedly rushing passes and throwing into tight spots. Culpepper remains the favorite to start in Week 1, but unless he shows marked improvement, it’s best to avoid the mess altogether.
  • DET Quarterback
Daunte Culpepper fumbled twice on his first three plays as an Oakland Raider.
One was a fumbled exchange from center, the other was a sack where Culpepper didn’t get rid of the ball. He was the third Raider to play Saturday, only in the second half, completing 5-of-12 passes for 78 yards. Josh McCown and Andrew Walter both played better during the team’s preseason opener.
  • DET Quarterback
Daunte Culpepper will start the Raiders’ third preseason game Friday night.
If he plays well, Culpepper could very well be the team’s opening-day starter as well. The feeling near the team is that he’ll get the nod over Josh McCown and Andrew Walter. McCown will come in second Friday, with Walter third.
