Rossum

Rossum has been resting since aggravating his hamstring Wednesday. Coach Jim Mora said he’ll be a game-time decisison. If he does sit, Roddy White or Romby Bryant would replace him on kick returns, while Christian Morton would replace him on defense.

WR Brian Finneran and CB DeAngelo Hall took his place returning punts, while Romby Bryant took over on kick returns.

Rossum was just one of many Atlanta defensive backs hurting. WR Michael Jenkins and CB DeAngelo Hall replaced Rossum as punt returner, and both made costly mistakes.

Rossum missed the past two games with a pulled hamstring and the Falcons have tried to compensate on returns with a variety of players. Roddy White might also be used on kickoff returns, while Chris Cash is expected to replace Rossum at nickel back.

Rossum had only taken limited snaps at nickel back before being flagged for a critical pass interference penalty on New England’s game-winning drive last week.

The 2004 Pro Bowler used San Diego to raise his price, but Rossum decided to stay in Atlanta. The Falcons have some of the best coverage teams in the league, so look for Rossum to remain a standout.

San Diego puts a premium on special teams and would love to replace Tim Dwight with Rossum, one of the best in the league.

Rossum will be replaced by receiver Adam Jennings on kick returns. He could take punt returning duties from Willie Reid in Pittsburgh.

He gives the Niners a return option if Maurice Hicks leaves in free agency, which appears likely. Rossum no longer is a capable defensive player.
