Rookie LB Alex Lewis is out with a high ankle sprain.
He was a contender to start on the weak side. Now it appears James Davis will start.

LB Alex Lewis (ankle) experienced a setback yesterday and is unlikely to play Sunday.
“Now that Teddy [Lehman]'s up, we’ve got enough linebackers to play the game and play well,” coach Steve Mariucci said.

Boss Bailey and Alex Lewis are expected to share time at strong-side linebacker for the Lions this season.
Bailey will open training camp and most likely the season as the starter, but Lewis will be on his heels. Bailey’s advantages are his size and experience. Lewis, a high-effort player, has a long-term deal but is only 6-0/228.

    Lions released LB Alex Lewis.
Lewis, 28, was making too much ($1 million) for a special teamer. Always a favorite of ex-coach Rod Marinelli, we’d say Lewis would fit with the Bears if they weren’t flush at linebacker. Seattle could certainly use the depth.

Lions signed LB Ryan Nece, formerly of the Buccaneers.
This reunion seemed inevitable, as Nece is a favorite of Lions defensive boss Joe Barry and the team has a hole on the strong side. Nece could pass current starter Alex Lewis on the depth chart early this season.

Lions third-round pick Jordon Dizon is expected to play strong-side linebacker as a rookie.
He’ll compete there with Alex Lewis. Coach Rod Marinelli would prefer Paris Lenon to start out the season at middle linebacker, then Dizon to move there when the coaching staff feels he’s ready. Dizon is Detroit’s MLB of the future.

Lions placed LB Alex Lewis (pectorals) on injured reserve, ending his season.
A gung-ho special teamer, Lewis began the year as Detroit’s top strong side linebacker but lost the job to Ryan Nece. Lewis is signed through 2009.
