Chargers waived/released G Karsen Barnhart, TE Luke Benson, DL Jerrod Clark, S Akeem Dent, RB Elijah Dotson, OLB Andrew Farmer II, TE Tucker Fisk, WR Jaelen Gill, LB Frank Ginda, CB Matt Hankins, S Thomas Harper, TE Zach Heins, DL Christopher Hinton, OLB Savion Jackson, LB Jeremiah Jean-Baptiste, WR Cornelius Johnson, WR Jaylen Johnson, CB Robert Kennedy, C Brent Laing, T Alex Leatherwood, LB Shane Lee, OLB Tre’Mon Morrish-Brash, DL CJ Okoye, TE Donald Parham, G Willis Patrick, QB Luis Perez, S Jalyn Phillips, LB Shaq Quarterman, TE Isaac Rex, OLB Ty Shelby, RB Isaiah Spiller, CB Zamari Walton, and WR Isaiah Wooden.
The big names are obviously Isaiah Spiller and Donald Parham Jr., but neither had the draft capital of Leatherwood, who continues to struggle to find a place in the NFL despite being the 17th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. It’s fair to wonder if he’s run out of chances.
  • LAC Guard #74
Chargers signed OL Alex Leatherwood, formerly of the Bears.
Leatherwood spent the 2023 season on Cleveland’s practice squad but last appeared in an NFL game in 2022 with the Bears. Chicago claimed Leatherwood off waivers after the Raiders cut him just ahead of the season. Leatherwood was a disastrous pick for the Raiders. He began his career at right tackle but was quickly moved to right guard when that didn’t work out. The former first-round pick was a highly-regarded prospect entering the league but is now at risk of flaming out after just three seasons. He is far from a lock to make the Chargers’ roster at the end of training camp.
  • FA Tackle #72
    Bears waived OL Alex Leatherwood.
Leatherwood was claimed by the Bears last offseason after the former first-rounder was cut by the Raiders after one season with the team. Leatherwood provided the Bears some added depth along the offensive line last season but appeared in just four games on offense — none of which were starts. Leatherwood could catch on with another team in the coming weeks, but he’s struggled mightily early on.
  • LAC Tackle #65
Bears activated Alex Leatherwood (illness) from the reserve/NFI list.
Leatherwood came down with a mono case shortly after the season’s start. He was designed to return just over two weeks ago. The former first-round pick will serve as a backup for the Bears’ offensive line.

  • LAC Tackle #65
Bears designated OT Alex Leatherwood (illness) to return from the reserve/non-football illness list.
Leatherwood reportedly was battling a case of mono. Chicago now has 21 days to activate him, although it is likely he is added back to the active roster this week.

  • LAC Tackle #65
Bears placed OT Alex Leatherwood on the reserve/non-football illness list.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Leatherwood is dealing with mono. He is eligible to return from the NFI list in Week 6, and given the reported illness, it seems likely he is ready to return by then. The Bears added OL Michael Schofield in a corresponding move.

  • LAC Tackle #65
Bears claimed OT Alex Leatherwood off waivers from the Raiders.
The Bears have one of the weakest offensive lines in the league and a second-year quarterback prone to taking sacks. Leatherwood won’t start for them, but he does give Chicago some upside on their bench. Leatherwood was the final bust taken by Raiders ex-GM Mike Mayock. Playing a mix of right guard and right tackle, he allowed 65 pressures and committed 14 penalties according to Pro Football Focus. Though it’s unlikely that Leatherwood can recover from such a disastrous rookie season, the move makes sense for a rebuilding Chicago roster. He will push fellow 2021 draft pick Teven Jenkins for reps at right guard if Jenkins continues to struggle.

  • LAC Tackle #65
    Raiders waived OT Alex Leatherwood.
The Raiders floated Leatherwood’s name in trade talks, but teams either knew Vegas would cut him or simply didn’t want to take on the remaining three years of his contract. The No. 17 overall pick of last year’s draft, Leatherwood was absolutely atrocious as a rookie right tackle. The Raiders had been giving him some looks at guard but ultimately decided to throw in the towel. Another colossal swing and a miss by ex-GM Mike Mayock. Leatherwood needs to be in a run-heavy offense.

  • LAC Tackle #65
The Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Vincent Bonsignore reports “all options are on the table” for second-year RT Alex Leatherwood, including trading or cutting him.
It would be quite the admission of defeat for the Raiders, dumping last year’s No. 17 overall pick, but the new Dave Ziegler-Josh McDaniels regime has no attachment to Leatherwood. There’s a chance he could also be moved inside to guard, but it’s clear this staff doesn’t view Leatherwood as a starter. A powerful run blocker, Leatherwood is horrid in pass protection. He’d probably be a better fit in a power run scheme. Veteran G/T Jermaine Eluemunor is viewed as the current favorite for right-tackle duties after following McDaniels over from New England.

  • LAC Tackle #65
NBC’s Peter King reports that Raiders OL Alex Leatherwood is “trailing” in his attempt to win the starting right tackle job against Brandon Parker.
Leatherwood was brutal in his first season, so it’s not really a surprise that he’s losing against Parker. The Raiders moved him back outside, but it seems like he’d be a better fit inside at this point. With a new regime in town, Leatherwood won’t be elevated purely on his standing inside the building. He could very well be a bench player this season.
