The Utah Jazz are interviewing Sam Cassell for their open head coaching job, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
Cassell has been an assistant coach in the NBA since 2009, and he has been a candidate for a number of head coaching jobs, most recently the Wizards opening last off-season. Cassell was a point guard on the 2008 Boston Celtics, who were constructed by Danny Ainge, who is now the CEO of the Jazz. The Jazz are casting a wide net, so we will know more about the opening as the candidate list begins to narrow, which might not happen for some time.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said on “The Hoop Collective” podcast that Sixers assistant Sam Cassell & Nuggets assistant Wes Unseld Jr are “two of the leading candidates” for the Wizards head coach opening.
Cassell is a native of Baltimore, which is just a short ride up I-95 from Washington, DC, and he also spent five years on the bench as an assistant coach with the Wizards from 2009-2014. Former Wizards guard John Wall has been on the record saying that Cassell was instrumental in his development as an NBA point guard. As for Unseld Jr, he also is a native of Baltimore and spent time as an assistant with the Wizards. Unseld Jr was on staff from 2005-2011, before spending time with the Warriors, Magic, and then the Nuggets since 2015 under Mike Malone. Probably his most notable connection to the franchise though is that his father, Wes Unseld is one of the best players in franchise history, having spent his entire 13-year playing career with the Bullets, winning the franchise’s only championship in 1978. He then went on to coach the team for a year as an assistant, and then six as the headman in charge from 1988-1994.

Sam Cassell reportedly interviewed for the head coaching vacancy with the Clippers.
Cassell has been a long-time assistant coach under Doc Rivers, but it appears like he’d like to start working his way into the head coaching realm. He’s also received interest from Houston, so while he may be an underdog for the L.A. gig, it’s possible we’ll see him in a head coaching role in the near future.

According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, there is mutual interest between the Rockets and Clippers assistant Sam Cassell regarding the team’s head coaching vacancy.
Cassell is the second Clippers assistant whose name has been mentioned in connection with the Rockets job, with the other being Tyronn Lue. It’s worth noting that Cassell began his playing career in Houston, winning two titles as a member of the “Clutch City” teams led by Hakeem Olajuwon. The Rockets job is one of the better ones on the market, even with the opinion of some being that the team’s championship window is closing.

Charles Tucker, Cassell’s agent, did not confirm that the player’s absence was purposeful. But he did say that Cassell is unhappy with his contract, which will pay him $5.65 million this season and $6.1 million in 2005-06. The agent also hinted at the possibility of a holdout if the Wolves don’t begin negotiations to add multiple years to the back end of Cassell’s deal.
