With the Magic out of the playoff picture, rumblings are beginning in Orlando for the Magic to take a look at first-round pick Reece Gaines.

Gaines has been on the IL with “patella tendinitis” since early December. The Magic say one of their priorities is developing young players, but that apparently only extends to Keith Bogans and Zaza Pachulia.

Gaines, the 15th overall pick in the 2003 draft, has played sparingly this season. His opportunities could increase if the Magic trade Shammond Williams and/or Steven Hunter. League sources indicate that Hunter and Williams could be waived soon if they cannot be dealt.

Orlando is trying to come to an agreement with Charlotte to prevent Gaines from being picked. It’s possible that the Magic will allow the Bobcats their choice of the top-two players in the draft. The Bobcats reportedly would prefer Emeka Okafor, so the Magic would take Dwight Howard first.
