Zach Randolph doesn’t get much elevation when he shoots. It looks like that’s not going to stop him shooting 3-pointers this season for the Memphis Grizzlies. On Tuesday night against the Philadelphia 76ers, Randolph went 4-of-6 from beyond-the-arc as part of a 17 point, eight rebound effort off the bench.

I’ll let you catch your breath.

Outside shooting has long plagued the “Grit n’ Grind” Grizzlies, who have been no better than 25th in 3-pointers made per-game over the last eight seasons.

With new head coach David Fizdale -- a longtime assistant in Miami -- the plan is to revitalize the Memphis offense to include a more modern approach to the arc. According to an interview with ESPN, that means incorporating 3-point shooting for the Grizzlies big men, including Marc Gasol:

“In my first conversation with Marc, I said, ‘Well, you know I’m going to start taking you out if you don’t get up at least four 3-pointers a game,’” Fizdale said. “And I think he about fell out of his chair when I said it. I wouldn’t have a job right now as a head coach if Chris Bosh couldn’t shoot 3s. And he developed that in Miami. I plan to do the same thing with Marc, and he’s already working on it like crazy.”

Randolph’s four made 3-pointers on Tuesday is surprising considering he’s never made more than 32 in a season and he’s hit single digits from long range in 10 of his 16 NBA seasons.

No telling yet whether the game against the Sixers is truly the shape of things to come for the Grizzlies or merely weirdo NBA preseason madness.
