The 2012 Sprite Slam Dunk contest seemed to be all about gimmicks, and Paul George of the Indiana Pacers was the one who led the charge.
This glow-in-the-dark dunk wasn’t a bad idea in theory, but he didn’t glow nearly enough for us to get a good enough look at that athletic, 360 windmill jam that he threw down essentially in the dark.
On one of his other dunks, George tried to pay a tribute to Pacers general manager Larry Bird by placing a sticker of Bird’s face on the backboard with one hand, while slamming the ball through with the other. Since Bird was never known for his dunking ability, it turned out to be more of a tribute to Dwight Howard’s sticker dunk from the 2007 event in Las Vegas than anything else.
George was rumored to be trying to convince Bird to show up in person and actually participate, but the Celtics legend has been around a long time -- he was obviously smart enough to stay away form this year’s nonsense.
