The Magic might not have been sad to see Scott Skiles go.
But that doesn’t mean they want to see him show up elsewhere.
Skiles, who abruptly resigned last week, reportedly had three (though not necessarily all guaranteed) years remaining on his contract. Those mean something.

What’s certain is that he won’t be coaching in the league for awhile, perhaps for as long as the next two seasons under a non-compete agreement with the Magic.
This won’t prohibit Skiles from coaching in the NBA the next two years. It just positions the Magic to receive compensation if someone wants to hire him.
Teams desiring a coach to set a tone, instill discipline and implement a solid defense should still consider Skiles. He has a proven track record in those areas, though you have to question whether he has the energy to repeat his previous results.
Given his lackluster results and stunning departure in Orlando, teams will be reluctant to hire him. I doubt this non-compete clause will matter, but just in case, the Magic are protected (and Skiles presumably gets a little walking-away money).
