Anthony Morrow had a rough 2012-13 season. Splitting time with the Mavericks and Hawks, he averaged a career-low 4.0 points in just 41 games as he battled injury.
Obviously, that wasn’t the best time to become a free agent.
Morrow saw little market for his outside-shooting skills, so he signed a minimum-salary contract with the New Pelicans – and, based on injury-related conditions, even that wasn’t fully guaranteed.
That deal gave Morrow a chance to rehab his stock and try again for a more favorable contract this summer, and he’s going to use it.
First of all, kudos to Sierra for identifying that he had only one source. Sometimes, that same situation is written as “sources” when the pluralized form is inaccurate. Sierra is usually reliable, but his wording gives us more information to make an informed judgment about this report.
Anyway, I believe it, and I believe it’s smart for Morrow.
Morrow should fetch more than the $1,145,685 he could have made this season by opting in.
After making 37 percent of his 3-pointers the previous two seasons, Morrow shot 45 percent from beyond the arc this year. His scoring average more than doubled to 8.4 points per game, though that’s still the second-lowest mark of his career. Most importantly, he stayed healthy.
At 28, he probably is what he is – an elite outside shooter with limited skills for anything else. He has to be put in the right situations, but in them, he’s worth more than the minimum.
