The Denver Nuggets received permission to interview Washington Wizards assistant Don Newman and discussed the franchise’s vacant head coaching job with him in the past week, league sources told RealGM.

Newman has helped build a solid defense in Washington, and the Wizards have won playoff series in consecutive years.

He previously worked under Gregg Popovich with the Spurs – an instant credibility builder for an assistant coach.

That’s the résumé of someone who deserves head-coaching consideration. I don’t expect Newman to get this job, but he’s at least putting himself on the radar.
