There’s still no clear timetable for Kyrie Irving’s return to the Cavaliers, but he’s making significant progress in his recovery. The latest step in that is being cleared to start weight-bearing activities on his surgically repaired left knee, which happened in recent days.

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer‘s Chris Haynes:

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving was recently cleared for intensive weight-bearing activities, league sources informed Cleveland.com.

From here, the team’s training staff can intensify his leg-strengthening assignments as it sees fit, I’m told.

This is a significant hurdle Irving has cleared in his recovery. The three-time All-Star is progressing, but this new phase in his rehabilitation from fracturing his left kneecap in Game 1 of The Finals still doesn’t grant him freedom for on-court work.

Irving had the surgery in early June after suffering the injury in Game 1 of the Finals, and at the time, the Cavs listed his recovery timetable as three to four months. It’s already been five. But it sounds like he’s getting closer to making it back. In the meantime, the Cavs have started the season 8-1 without him.
