Kenyon Martin played for the Knicks last season, but was limited to just 32 appearances due to injury.
At Summer League in Las Vegas, Martin said he was feeling “night and day” from the way he did while battling ankle issues last year, and expressed hope that he would return to the Knicks this season.
For whatever reason, New York decided to go in a different direction. But Martin must feel he still has something left to give, as he continues to meet with teams about a possible return -- either as a player, or possibly, as an assistant coach.
From Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal:
The Grizzlies have one of the best big man tandems in the league with Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol, but it gets thin on the front line fairly quickly after that, with only Kosta Koufos as a legitimate threat to play any real frontline minutes off the bench.
Martin could help from a depth perspective, or may act as insurance should one of the regular rotation players at his position go down with an injury. It may make more sense, however, for teams to wait until 10-day contracts become available to give Martin a true tryout before committing to him for the bulk of the season -- and that can’t happen until January, at the earliest.
